Many grandparents raising grandchildren express to me the feelings of isolation, feeling that no one really knows how they feel. Most people don't know what it is like. Now that I am not raising my grandchildren, I find it just as hard to still find friends that truly understand what motivates me and makes me who I am.
The people I meet now, never knew me three years ago when the children left to live with their mother. They never saw me hauling around grandchildren and being a mom. Many still think I don't look old enough to be a grandmother. But one thing I find so far is that no one understands why my heart still hurts when I think of the children and the pain of not being part of their lives.They sort of look at me like my head isn't screwed on quite right or that I have 3 eye balls.
When a sweet grandchild's birthday comes and goes and I have no contact, they do not understand why it bothers me so. What's the big deal? Just get over it and move on. Yes, I must move on (and I am), however I will never "just get over it." I will still buy them birthday gifts with dated tags. They will receive them some day. AND I will focus more attention on the grandchildren I do have contact with. I do not live near any of the grandchildren now, so gifts and notes must be mailed.
But back to the topic of those who just don't get it. Some never will, and what seems sad to me is the fact that so many really do not want to get it. It is what it is. But even though my grandchildren are far away, I get it. I will always get it, and I am glad to have had the opportunity to have "gotten it."
