Apple Patents On-Hold Media Sharing, Dual Sensor Imaging For iPhone, iPad And Mac

Apple has won a couple of patents today from the USPTO (via AppleInsider), and both are very practical advancements of tech that it?s easy to imagine being integrated in upcoming versions of existing devices. One is a camera sensor imaging enhancement that could make its way into both mobile and Mac product lines, and the other is a way to make hold more enjoyable for the person doing the waiting on a call.

The imaging patent describes a dual sensor camera system that could be integrated into iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone, as well as into Mac computers, that would use two sensors instead of one to capture simultaneous imaging data and then stitch those together intelligently, picking the best of each and obscuring the other sensor?s faults.

This would have the effect of covering up bad or dead pixels on one sensor, identifying blurry parts or strange exposure or lighting effects and compensating with image data captured by the other sensor. The patent describes a way for it to work with both still images and video, which is probably why it?s described as being useful both for mobile devices and for Macs, where it could help improve video quality being fed to chat applications from the built-in FaceTime camera.

The hold call patent is perhaps of more limited utility, but it does provide a way for users to share their photos and music with one another in an unconventional way. When people are on hold, they?d be presented with a variety of available data from the other party that they could browse while waiting. Options include pictures, music, upcoming events, location, books, wait time, status updates, videos or a recorded message, and a user can customize what kind of content gets shared, and where it gets sourced.

Access to hold content can be adjusted on a granular level, too, allowing you to opt to share some types of content only with family members for instance, while all callers have a much more constrained set of data to check out. Since it could potentially be something the hold party might actually enjoy, there?s even a provision that would let the person who put you on hold indicate they?re ready to come back on the line, giving you a chance to wrap up.

It?s a little precious, as use cases for this might be limited (who even talks on the phone anymore, let alone puts anyone on hold?) but it?s also potentially an easy way for Apple to indirectly advertise more of its iTunes content, and it?s a feature that would show well in demos and in marketing material. Also, it seems like it would be relatively easy to implement.

George Zimmerman listens as the verdict is announced on July 13.

By Tom Winter and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Police say George Zimmerman helped rescue?a family?trapped in an overturned vehicle off a Florida highway last week, Zimmerman's first known public sighting since his acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The incident occurred on July 17 in Sanford, Fla., near the intersection of Interstate 4 and State Road 46, officials confirmed to NBC News. The rescue was first reported by ABC News.

Zimmerman and another man were assisting a family of four when officers with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene of the accident. A blue Ford Explorer had traveled off the road and rolled over, according to officials. ?

Zimmerman and the other man were helping the two children and their parents get out of the overturned vehicle, the Seminole County Sheriff?s Office said. The former neighborhood watch volunteer left the scene after making contact with police and did not witness the crash.

There were no injuries to any of the vehicle?s occupants, according to police.

A Seminole County jury found Zimmerman not guilty July 13 in the death of 17-year-old Martin. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense on Feb. 26, 2012.?

Since then, Zimmerman?s family has said the 29-year-old was in hiding and had received death threats. Zimmerman?s parents said in an interview that they don?t even know where their son is hiding.

The verdict has prompted rallies and protests. Protests in Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., turned violent as demonstrators called for an overhaul of the justice system and repeal of Florida?s ?Stand Your Ground? self-defense law.?

'Machete' filmmaker claims Texas withdrew funding over 'inappropriate' depiction of Texans

Houston: A lawsuit filed by Austin filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and the production company behind his film "Machete" accuses The Texas Film Commission of denying agreed-to financial incentives after the agency decided the film was "inappropriate."

Machete Chop Shop Inc. says in a suit filed on Saturday in Travis County that the commission backed out of partially reimbursing the cost of the film after coming under fire for its violence and depiction of Texans.

Before the movie was released in September 2010, anti-immigration groups were upset over the film's trailer, citing its violent imagery and Robert DeNiro's cartoonish role as a senator who kills illegal immigrants.

According to court documents, the producers' application for a grant under the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program was approved in May 2009, one month after Governor Rick Perry signed the program into law at Mr Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios.

At the bill signing, Mr Rodriguez announced that the bill would allow him to make films in Texas, including "Machete."

The complaint states that former commission head Bob Hudgins verified that the script complied with content requirements and also claims he approved the incentive package.

Once filmmakers knew they had additional state funding, they increased their budget, the complaint says, banking on a state contribution of nearly $US8 million.

Canadian authorities to perform autopsy on 'Glee' star Monteith

(Reuters) - Canadian authorities said on Monday they will perform an autopsy including toxicology tests to determine the cause of death of actor Cory Monteith, the 31-year-old heartthrob of Fox's musical-comedy television series "Glee" who was found dead on Saturday in a Vancouver hotel room.

The British Columbia Coroners Service said the autopsy will be carried out immediately but results will not be available for several days. Toxicology tests are used to determine if drugs, alcohol or other substances were in his body at the time of death.

"We do understand there's a lot of public interest in this case and we will try to get it done in as good a time as we can without compromising the integrity of the investigation," said Barbara McLintock, a spokeswoman for the Coroners Service.

Monteith was found dead shortly after noon on Saturday in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel. Vancouver police said they believe he was alone in the room after returning to the hotel early on Saturday morning.

Monteith was public about his struggles with substance abuse. In April, he completed voluntary treatment for unspecified substance addiction at a rehab facility. He had also been treated in a facility at age 19.

The actor, who grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, told Parade magazine in 2011 that he had a serious drug problem during his teenage years for which he received treatment.

Monteith began his career in a number of small roles leading up to a recurring part between 2006 and 2007 in the ABC Family science-fiction drama "Kyle XY" and another role around the same time on the MTV series "Kaya."

"Glee," a show set in the small town of Lima, Ohio, was Monteith's breakthrough. The show is centered on a high school glee club. Popular for its song and dance routines and big-name guest stars, the show has won Golden Globe and Peabody awards.

Monteith played high school athlete Finn Hudson in the series.

University of Huddersfield

Eleven initiatives were selected in the Yorkshire and Humber region with the University of Huddersfield being the only higher education institution to be lead partner in a selected project.

The funding will enable the creation of a Centre of Innovation in Rail.

The University is already home to the Institute of Railway Research, which itself welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, earlier this year.

The Institute of Railway Research (IRR), which has 16 researchers based in a suite of specially-equipped labs, is involved in a wide range of projects with partners that include Network Rail, London Underground, TATA Steel and the Rail Safety and Standards Board.

The IRR plays a major role in the safety and environmental sustainability of the railways of the future and key areas of research focuses on rail vehicle dynamics and the interface between wheel and rail.

Current projects include European Framework 7 collaborations that aim to increase the sustainability, competitiveness and safety of rail freight. The IRR team are also investigating wheel damage mechanisms, development of track alignment faults and lightweight vehicle components.

The IRR also works with operators of light railways and metro services, whose problems with the wheel-rail interface are different to those of the heavy rail operators.

The Institute is headed by Professor Simon Iwnicki, who is also co-chair of the Rail Research UK Association and has a global reputation for his work on many aspects of railway technology, especially the crucial interface between wheel and track.

"I am delighted that the Government has agreed to support our bid for the Centre of Innovation in Rail," said Professor Iwnicki. "There is still much work to be concluded on the detail of the project and discussions will be taking place over the coming months. This is an extremely exciting enterprise for the Institute and our work and for the University as a whole.

"The project will build upon the world-class R&D, training and innovation capabilities of the project partners to provide the rail industry and its supply chain with fundamental and applied research and other services to address identified challenges in engineering, safety, risk and skills.

"It will develop tools and techniques, embed these, and undertake knowledge transfer activity to improve competitiveness of the UK railway. It will also provide high level training and skills development for current and potential future rail industry employees."
