Parties are worlds apart on how to fix economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Millions of Americans are desperate for work, runaway government spending clouds the future and Democratic and Republican candidates are busy making one thing clear: They're light years apart on what to do about it.

They do agree that in this election, the economy is everything. President Barack Obama calls it "the defining issue of our time." But for voters wishing Washington would come together in a time of crisis, Obama, his Republican rival Mitt Romney and their congressional allies don't offer much hope

Instead, they've taken to describing the gulf on economic policy in galactic terms. Romney must be "on a different planet," an Obama adviser declares. The president is "living in an alternative universe," the Republican Party chief says.

On planet Republican: The economy is backsliding, and the president is to blame. His stimulus spending did more harm than good, and his big-government rules are strangling businesses. The answer is repealing health care, energy and financial regulations and cutting taxes. That should spark investment and create jobs. Tackling the deficit requires huge spending cuts, just not at the Pentagon. The unsustainable guarantee of Medicare and Medicaid must change.

In the Democratic universe: The economy's slowly improving, thanks to government spending that helped fend off a depression. Another dose of targeted spending will help. Republican policies in the Bush administration ? cutting taxes and eliminating rules ? brought on the financial crisis and budget deficits. The rich should help dig us out by paying higher taxes. The Pentagon's budget must be cut, but entitlement spending can be controlled without drastically altering the social safety net.

"These two positions are almost diametrically opposed to each other," said Sung Won Sohn, a California State University economics professor. "And there's no common ground it seems."

They can't both be right.

How do voters decide which economic world they're living in?

You could try asking an economist.

Republicans and Democrats alike offer up prominent names ? many still arguing the supply-siders versus Keynesian debates that heated up during the Reagan administration. Did President George W. Bush's tax cuts boost the economy or just pile up more debt? Was Obama's $831 billion stimulus worthwhile or wasted money?

"Our economy is too complex, too complicated. No one knows for sure what the right answer is," Sohn said. "Economists are the first ones to admit we've been wrong many, many times."

This time, the stakes are high.

Recovery from the financial meltdown and 2007-2009 recession has been slow. Not even half of the 8.8 million jobs that were lost have come back. States and cities are still laying off workers. Unemployment hovers at 8.2 percent. Even for those with jobs, wages and net worth haven't recovered. Europe's troubles pose new threats.

More problems are ahead: Annual deficits of more than a trillion dollars per year have piled up $15.7 trillion in national debt. The crush of baby boomer retirees over the next two decades threatens to ruin the nation's finances, unless politicians slow spending on Medicare and Social Security.

Anxiety about the mushrooming national debt, exacerbated by bank bailouts and stimulus spending, fueled the tea party movement that helped Republicans win control of the House in 2010. That set off a series of showdowns with Obama over taxes, spending and the federal debt ceiling.

The ongoing brinkmanship has unsettled Wall Street investors, business owners timid about hiring and plenty of voters, too. Three-quarters of Americans say the federal government is too divided along party lines. Only 20 percent think it can usually work together to get things done, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in April.

A glimmer of Washington cooperation would make a big difference for the economy right now, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

"If they could signal that they would be willing to work together to do something substantive and helpful," he said, "it could ease the collective psyche and help soothe nerves."

So far, no one's signaling a congressional kumbaya to come after the November elections.

Instead, Obama is telling voters they can break the stalemate by electing Democrats. That's a longshot ? an Obama win would be unlikely to sweep Democrats into control of the House. If elected, Romney is considered more likely to enjoy a kindred Congress. But Democrats would probably hold onto enough Senate seats to impede Romney's agenda under that chamber's rules.

Times of war bring the nation together; maybe economic peril can do the same. Are voters scared enough to push for action?

"People like low taxes. People like small government," said David Wyss, former chief economist for Standard & Poor's. "But then they want their Social Security and Medicare, and a strong Defense Department, and getting the airport and the roads built in their city. Nobody's willing to tell them they can't have it both ways."

Sohn, who's been following these debates since serving as an economist for Richard Nixon's White House, said the problems are too dire this time to allow politicians to hide behind their partisan differences.

"In this situation, the worst thing you can do is to cause gridlock by trying to stick to your economic philosophy," he said. "We want to make sure the economic ship stays afloat. If the ship sinks, all this argument is for naught."

I felt this viscerally last month when a friend from Facebook came to me to talk investing.?A talented engineer who has been at the company for more than five years, my friend just reaped a pretty nice IPO payday. As you might expect, he?s been contacted by a seemingly endless list of investment advisors, slightly different in their approaches but all promising the same things ? a steady hand at the till, privileged access to top flight investment funds, and a portfolio that?s lower risk and higher return than the market.?Fed up with all the competing claims, he has started thinking about investing his money himself. After all, he must be bright enough to outsmart the fickle fools who seem to follow Jim Cramer?s every whim. Right??He wanted to know what I thought he should do. My first response was to slap him on the back and congratulate him again.?It?s a rare and special time when so many people are rewarded so spectacularly for their hard work and ingenuity.?As an entrepreneur myself, I love to see people with the courage to take an uncharted path succeed. (AP) ? U.N. observers in Syria suspended their activities and patrols Saturday because of escalating violence in the country, the head of the mission said, the strongest sign yet that an international peace plan for Syria is disintegrating.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood said rising bloodshed over the past 10 days was posing significant risks to the lives of the 300 unarmed observers in the country, and was impeding their ability to carry out their mandate.

The observers were sent to the country after international envoy Kofi Annan brokered a peace plan that included a cease-fire that was supposed to take effect on April 12. But both sides have continued to stage daily attacks and the observers themselves have been caught up in the violence on several occasions.

The Syrian government, intent on wresting back control of rebel-held areas, launched a fierce offensive in recent days to recover territories in several locations, shelling heavily populated districts and using attack helicopters over towns and cities.

U.N. officials have said that the opposition, in turn, is increasingly coordinating attacks against government forces and civilian infrastructure.

On Saturday, government troops kept up their relentless shelling of rebel-held districts in the central city of Homs, killing at least five. Another 12, including a man, his wife and child, were killed in overnight shelling of suburbs of the capital Damascus.

"U.N. observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," Mood said in a statement Saturday. He said the observers will not leave the country, and the suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis.

"Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities," he said.

The suspension signals the unraveling of Annan's plan as the conflict that began in March 2011 with peaceful protests challenging the regime spirals closer toward civil war. Activists say some 14,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Western powers have pinned their hopes on the plan, in part because there are no other options on the table. The international community has little appetite for the military intervention that helped oust Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions have failed to stop the bloodshed.

"The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition, and the push towards advancing military positions is increasing the losses on both sides," Mood said. "It is also posing significant risks to our observers."

He did not elaborate or say whether the monitors might eventually leave, but on Friday, he said states that provide the observers were concerned that the risk is approaching an unacceptable level ? suggesting the violence could prompt the observers to pull out of the country at some point.

The Syrian government said it conveyed to Mood its "understanding" of the decision taken and blamed the rebels, whom it refers to as "terrorists" for the escalation.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had "clarified to the leadership of the U.N. mission that armed terrorist groups have conducted, since the signing of the Annan plan, an increase in criminal operations that have targeted, many times, the observers, and threatened their lives."

The opposition, for its part, has blamed the regime for the attacks near the observers.

The observers have been tasked with monitoring the cease-fire and supporting the full implementation of Annan's six-point plan, which was supposed to lead to talks between the sides. Instead, they got caught up in the bloodshed, and have often been blocked from reaching the site of massacres and other violence until too late.

Last week, an observers' convoy was blocked and attacked with stones, metal rods and gunfire by an angry crowd as it was trying to head to the town of Haffa in the coastal Latakia region, where troops had been battling rebels for a week.

The observers only managed to enter once government troops had seized the area back from the rebels.

On May 15, a roadside bomb damaged observers' cars shortly after they met with Syrian rebels in the northern town of Khan Sheikoun. A week earlier, a roadside bomb struck a Syrian military truck in the south of the country just seconds after Mood drove by in a convoy.

Still, their presence has been a crucial source of independent information, particularly as Syria bars journalists from reporting freely in the country.

Despite fears that violence could significantly worsen without the their presence on the ground, prominent activist Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was better for the U.N. teams to leave.

"We haven't seen anything beneficial from them. If they are independent ? so what?" he said. "A lot of crimes happened in Syria, and they couldn't do anything."

He called on the international community to more actively intervene to halt the bloodshed in Syria.

"The situation can't get worse than this: are we afraid that it's a civil war? Well it is a civil war. The situation is difficult. The international community's silence on Syria is working to destroy Syria," Abdul-Rahman said.

In the Damascus suburb of Douma, where overnight shelling killed 12 people, activist Mohammed Douma said the presence of observers had been irrelevant anyway, adding that they hadn't visited Douma, a hotspot, in a week.

"But anyway, all they can do is record what they see, they cannot help," he said.

Panetta salutes gays in military

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Friday thanked gay and lesbian military members for their service, as the Pentagon prepares to mark June as gay pride month with an official salute.

In a remarkable sign of a cultural change in the U.S. military, Panetta said that with the repeal last year of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law that prohibited gays from serving openly in the military, gays and lesbians can now be proud to be in uniform.

"Now you can be proud of serving your country, and be proud of who you are," Panetta said.

The defense chief also said he's committed to removing as many barriers as possible to making the military a model of equal opportunity.

Panetta's video message was part of a Pentagon salute to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender troops as the Pentagon joined the rest of the U.S. government for the first time in marking June as gay pride month..

It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had prohibited gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces.

On Friday the Pentagon announced that its gay pride event -- the first of its kind -- will be held June 26 in the Pentagon. It will feature remarks by Jeh Johnson, the top Pentagon lawyer, as well as a panel discussion of the value of gay service and diversity, with gay and lesbian service members participating.

This month's event will follow a long tradition at the Pentagon of recognizing diversity in America's armed forces. Hallway displays and activities, for example, have marked Black History Month and Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

Before the repeal, gay troops could serve but couldn't reveal their orientation. If they did, they would be discharged. At the same time, a commanding officer was prohibited from asking a service member whether he or she was gay.

Although some feared repeal of the ban on serving openly would cause problems in the ranks, officials and gay advocacy groups say no big issues have materialized ? aside from what advocacy groups criticize as slow implementation of some changes, such as benefit entitlements to troops in same-sex marriages.

Basic changes have come rapidly since repeal; the biggest is that gay and lesbian soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines no longer have to hide their sexuality in order to serve. They can put photos on their office desk without fear of being outed, attend social events with their partners and openly join advocacy groups looking out for their interests.

OutServe, a once-clandestine professional association for gay service members, has nearly doubled in size to more than 5,500 members. It held its first national convention of gay service members in Las Vegas last fall, then a conference on family issues this year in Washington.

At West Point, the alumni gay advocacy group Knights Out was able to hold the first installment in March of what is intended to be an annual dinner in recognition of gay and lesbian graduates and Army cadets. Gay students at the U.S. Naval Academy were able to take same-sex dates to the academy's Ring Dance for third-year midshipmen.

Panetta said last month that military leaders had concluded that repeal had not affected morale or readiness. A report to Panetta with assessments from the individual military service branches said that as of May 1 they had seen no ill effects.

"I don't think it's just moving along smoothly, I think it's accelerating faster than we even thought the military would as far as progress goes," said Air Force 1st Lt. Josh Seefried, a finance officer and co-director of OutServe.

He said acceptance has been broad among straight service members and has put a spotlight on unequal treatment that gays continue to receive in some areas. "We are seeing such tremendous progress in how much the military is accepting us, but not only that ? in how much the rank and file is now understanding the inequality that's existing right now," he said.

That's a reference to the fact that same-sex couples aren't afforded spousal health care, assignments to the same location when they transfer to another job, and other benefits. There was no immediate change to eligibility standards for military benefits in September. All service members already were entitled to certain things, such as designating a partner as one's life insurance beneficiary or as designated caregiver in the Wounded Warrior program.

As for other benefits still not approved, the department began a review after repeal with an eye toward possibly extending eligibility, consistent with the federal Defense of Marriage Act and other applicable laws, to the same-sex partners of military personnel.

"The department is carefully and deliberately reviewing the benefits from a policy, fiscal, legal and feasibility perspective," Eileen Lainez, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said Thursday.

Gay marriage has been perhaps the most difficult issue.

Though chaplains on bases in some states are allowed to hold what the Pentagon officials call "private services" ? they don't use the words wedding or marriage ? such unions do not garner marriage benefits because the Defense of Marriage Act says marriage is between a man and a woman.

The "don't ask, don't tell" policy was in force for 18 years, and its repeal was a slow and deliberate process.

President Barack Obama on Dec. 22, 2010, signed legislation repealing it. Framing the issue as a matter of civil rights long denied, Obama said, "We are a nation that welcomes the service of every patriot ... a nation that believes that all men and women are created equal."

The military then did an assessment for several months to certify that the forces were prepared to implement it in a way that would not hurt military readiness. And it held training for its 2.25 million-person force to inform everyone of the coming change and what was expected.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 (Reuters) - The electricity was back as Tiger Woods moved into once familiar territory on Thursday, clawing his way into contention with a one-under-par 69 in tough scoring conditions to lie three shots off the U.S. Open lead.

As the year's second major lived up to its reputation as the toughest championship of all, the former world number one mixed three birdies with two bogeys to finish the first round three behind fellow American Michael Thompson at the Olympic Club.

"I played well today," three-times champion Woods told reporters after breaking 70 in the opening round of a U.S. Open for the first time since 2002 with a superb display of course management on a firm and fast-running layout.

"I felt like I had control of my game all day. I'm really excited how I was able to execute my game plan all day today. The golf course was really quick.

"We knew the greens were going to be a little quicker, but I didn't think they would be this firm this early in the week. So we had to make a couple of adjustments with that."

Woods was one of just six players who broke par, ending the round tied for second with fellow Americans Nick Watney and David Toms, Britain's Justin Rose and 2010 champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland.

Watney capped a memorable display in glorious afternoon sunshine with a rare albatross two at the par-five 17th, holing out with a five-iron from the fairway for only the third double-eagle ever recorded at a U.S. Open.

The little known Thompson, who tied for 29th in his only previous U.S. Open appearance in 2008, upstaged the game's biggest names by carding a seven-birdie 66 on the challenging, hilly Lake Course.

Though Thompson bogeyed three of the first six holes - a stretch widely regarded as the most difficult start in the majors - he then surged up the leaderboard with six birdies in bright sunshine to take control of the tournament.

"This is one of my favourite golf courses, so I've got good feelings coming in here," said the 27-year-old Thompson, who booked his place in this week's field via sectional qualifying.

"I just got the putter hot today. I got kind of a wake-up call on the first hole, I missed my par putt because I didn't realise the greens were that fast. From then on, I was just trying to flow."

American world number six Matt Kuchar, 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk, Swede Robert Karlsson and Britain's Ian Poulter were among a group of eight locked on 70.

Most of the players struggled on the tight fairways and surprisingly quick greens, Phil Mickelson carding a 76, defending champion Rory McIlroy a 77, Masters champion Bubba Watson a 78 and world number one Luke Donald a nine-bogey 79.

'TOUGH DAY'

"I didn't play very well," Mickelson said after a round including seven bogeys, one birdie and a lost ball with his opening tee shot, a wild hook into trees. "It was a tough day when you play it the way I did."

McIlroy, who romped to victory by eight shots in last year's U.S. Open at Congressional, paid the price for hitting only seven of 14 fairways.

"It's just so tough here if you put yourself out of position at all," the 23-year-old said. "When you're trying to play catch-up on this golf course it's very hard.

"I was able to make only one birdie out there today. I need to try to make more tomorrow and limit the mistakes."

Left-hander Watson never recovered from four bogeys in his first eight holes but was hugely impressed by Woods.

"That was the old Tiger," he gushed. "That was beautiful to watch. That's what we all want to watch and that was awesome to see him strike the ball look. He made a couple (of) bogeys but under par on this golf course is pretty good."

Woods, who won the most recent of his 14 major titles at the 2008 U.S. Open, oozed confidence throughout his round as he outshone playing partners Mickelson and Watson in front of huge galleries.

He was rock solid as he parred his first five holes after teeing off at the ninth, bogeyed the 14th after his tee shot ended up in thick rough but recovered with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 17th.

Woods then knocked in birdie putts from 10 and 30 feet at the fourth and fifth to move within a stroke of the lead before making his only other stumble, a bogey at the par-four sixth.

"This golf course, it's so demanding and if you're off your game just a little bit, you're going to pay the price," said Woods, who completed his U.S. Open preparation with his 73rd PGA Tour victory at the Memorial tournament two weeks ago in Ohio.

"I felt very pleased with every facet of my game today and I stayed very patient out there."

Chinese teenager Andy Zhang, at 14 the youngest competitor at a U.S. Open since 1945 and possibly of all time, opened with a 79.

The day's average score was 74.92 on the twisting, hilly and heavily tree-lined layout. (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes in San Francisco; Editing by Frank Pingue and Nick Mulvenney)

Heat survive Thunder rally for 100-96 win

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? LeBron James had received plenty of help from Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and now he had to finish it on his own.

With what Wade called the loudest crowd he'd ever heard booing, certain James had just fouled Kevin Durant, the league's MVP walked to the free throw line with 7.1 seconds left and the Miami Heat's huge lead down to two points.

The guy who has endured too many fourth-quarter failures wasn't letting another NBA Finals game get away.

James made both free throws, completing a 12-for-12 performance at the line and a 32-point night, and the Heat held on for a 100-96 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night that evened the series at one game apiece.

"On a big stage like this in a big game like this, every point counts, every point matters. So you go to the free throw line, no matter how hostile the environment, and try to knock them down," James said.

"Like I said, I'm happy that I was able to go up there and make a few plays, go up there and make my free throws. We needed it. We needed every point tonight."

Wade rebounded from a poor opener to add 24 points and Bosh had 16 points and 15 rebounds in his return to the starting lineup for the Heat, who needed a big night from their Big Three to snap a four-game finals losing streak with their first victory since Game 3 against Dallas last year.

"It's been so long since we've had them all together," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "They played like the All-Stars that they are and that's the effort that we need."

Now they go home to host Game 3 on Sunday and the next two after that, knowing they don't have to hear the noisy Thunder fans again ? not to mention all their critics ? if they win all three.

Miami blew a 13-point lead in Game 1 and seemed headed toward a repeat of the second game of the finals last year, when it blew a 15-point edge on its home floor.

Not this time.

"This is a good team and we didn't want to be down 2-0," Bosh said. "We know in order to accomplish our goal, we have to win on the road. We're a good road team. We've done it before. They posed a great challenge because they haven't lost up until today. But we felt that we let one get away and we felt that we could play a much, much better game in Game 2."

Durant scored 32 points for the Thunder, but missed a short jumper with 9.9 seconds left after appearing to be bumped by James. The basket would have tied a game the Thunder trailed the entire way.

Oklahoma City's explosive point guard Russell Westbrook finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but shot 10 of 26 from the field.

James Harden tried to keep the Thunder in it early and finished with 21 points, but this time the Thunder couldn't come back from a double-digit deficit after spotting Miami a 17-point advantage during their worst first half of the season.

"That was the game. We can't start off down 18-2," Durant said. "We can't go down that much, especially at home. We've got to correct it."

It was the first home loss in 10 postseason games for the Thunder, who have trailed by double digits in their last three games.

James had what was his career high, 30 points, in the opener, but afterward said Wade needed to be Wade ? All-Star, Olympic gold medalist and finals MVP.

In Game 1, Wade was 7 of 19. He wasn't sharp in the last round and continues to hear reports that something is physically wrong with him. He was all but asked Wednesday if his explosiveness was a thing of the past, what must have been insulting to a player who, though 30, still believes he's not far from the top of the game.

Wade bounced back in a big way, not quite at the level he was as the 2006 finals MVP, but certainly good enough with the help around him now for the Heat to win another one.

"Just know that I'm always going to keep coming back until I don't play this game no more," Wade said. "I know my abilities, I know what I'm capable of and it was good."

He spun into the lane and found Bosh for a dunk that seemed to have the Heat safe at 98-91 inside the final minute, but a 3-pointer by Durant cut it to 98-96 with 37 seconds left. After James missed a 3-pointer, the Thunder got the ball into Durant, who appeared to be knocked off balance by James as he missed the baseline shot attempt.

Durant said only that he missed the shot, saying he would have to watch the tape to see if he was fouled.

Bosh started after coming off the bench in every game since returning late last round from his nine-game absence with a strained lower abdominal muscle. The Big Three joined Battier and Mario Chalmers in the lineup, the first time Miami had gone with that first five all season.

It sent the Heat on their way to a terrific start, and Battier matched his surprising 17-point performance in Game 1 by going 5 of 7 from 3-point range, providing all the help the superstar trio needed.

James had his fifth straight 30-point game, breaking Wade's franchise playoff record, and added eight rebounds. He defended Durant early and helped put the league's scoring champion in foul trouble, just one of the problems the Thunder had early.

Another loud, blue and white crowd tried to inspire them to rally, but Durant and company never got close until the final minutes.

Durant nailed a 3-pointer and drove into the lane to throw down a dunk over Battier that cut it to 82-74 with 8:22 remaining. His 3-pointer from the wing trimmed it to 90-86, and the Thunder got it all the way to 94-91 when Westbrook dunked Durant's miss with 1:48 to go.

James answered by banking in a jumper for his first basket of the final period, as the Big Three combined for all but one of Miami's seven field goals in the fourth quarter.

The Thunder missed 11 of their first 12 shots, and when James capped a run of 13 straight Miami points with a basket, it was 18-2 with 4:51 remaining in the period.

Coach Scott Brooks had talked to his team about its poor starts and told the Thunder during a first-quarter timeout that the Heat were playing harder than they were. The Heat kept it up, pushing it to 25-8 on Wade's jumper with 2:39 left.

"We kept missing good shots," Thunder forward Serge Ibaka said. "We can do better."

Notes: The Heat used their 25th different lineup in their 86 games this season, including seventh of the postseason. The most frequently used lineup in the regular season, with James, Wade, Bosh, Chalmers and center Joel Anthony, has not opened a game in the postseason after going 27-10 during the regular season. ... Reserve James Jones checked in for the Heat in the first quarter after missing Game 1 with a migraine. ... Former Oklahoma star running back Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings was at the game. ... A powerful storm knocked out cable in many South Florida homes, keeping Heat fans from seeing the entire game.

Dodgers beat Mariners night after being no-hit

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:42 p.m. ET June 9, 2012

SEATTLE (AP) - The Los Angeles clubhouse was loose before Saturday's game. Players joked and discussed the previous night's no-hitter against them.

Neither manager Don Mattingly or the Dodgers hitters appeared troubled. Then they went out and proved it.

Jerry Hairston Jr. had a career-best five RBIs and Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high 12, leading the Dodgers over the Seattle Mariners 8-3.

"It's just a bounceback," Mattingly said. "It tells you guys kind of recovered from last night. Didn't really set us off into any tailspin, obviously."

Hairston had three of the Dodgers' 14 hits, putting Los Angeles ahead with a three-run homer in the first against Jason Vargas (7-5). He added RBI doubles in the third off Vargas and in the eighth against Shawn Kelley.

After missing 16 games with a left hamstring strain, Hairston is hitting .426 with five doubles and 11 RBIs since he was activated from the disabled list May 25.

"I've been feeling pretty good for a while," Hairston said. "The biggest thing is I just want to make sure I have good at bats. "

Kershaw (5-3), the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings and struck out the side in the first. His main error came on a fourth-inning slider to Miguel Olivo that stayed flat. Oliver hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run drive.

In Kershaw's previous outing, he gave up a two-run homer to Philadelphia's Placido Polanco.

"I wish my mistakes didn't go over the fence right now and cost me three runs," Kershaw said, not quite remembering correctly. "I don't care about giving up home runs, but they just can't be three-run homers."

Vargas gave up five runs and nine hits in six innings. A day earlier, six pitchers combined to no-hit Los Angeles.

After struggling through a 33-pitch first, Vargas fell behind 5-0 in the third when Hairston doubled in a run and scored on James Loney's single. Vargas' pitch count was up to 66 by the end of the inning.

"Hairston killed us today, for the most part," Vargas said.

Kershaw recorded seven of his first nine outs with strikeouts. By the end of the fourth inning, Kershaw had struck out nine Mariners, matching his season-high.

When faced with Olivo again in the sixth, Kershaw fell behind 2-0 with a runner on first. Olivo couldn't come through, however, fouling out near first.

"He was able to get another gear when he needed to," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.

Dee Gordon stole two bases, raising his season total to 16. He pulled off a double steal with Tony Gwynn Jr. in the ninth, allowing Gwynn Jr. to score on a fielder's choice. Juan Rivera followed with a sacrifice fly.

NOTES: Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen is determining what to do with the ball from the final out of Friday night's combined no-hitter. Wilhelmsen said he has it in a "safe place" and isn't sure how to divide it among the six pitchers who no-hit the Dodgers. ... Wedge said Felix Hernandez is on schedule to start Tuesday against the Padres. Hernandez has been experiencing back pain, which caused him to take extra time between starts.

Mitochondrial disorder treated by targeting nucleus

Mitochondria act like tiny generators inside our cells, but when they go wrong they may trigger a range of diseases. The root of the problem can lie in mutations in the DNA carried within mitochondria, which is distinct from the DNA in the cell's nucleus.

One such mitochondrial disorder is Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), a rare cause of vision loss in young adulthood.

In LHON, problems arise with a protein assembly called Complex I, which is encoded in part by the DNA in mitochondria. The dysfunction leads to the death of retinal ganglion cells at the back of the eye.

Using gene therapy to fix glitches in mitochondrial DNA is challenging, not least because the therapy must be delivered to the many mitochondria in each cell. Now Jane Farrar at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and her colleagues have demonstrated a workaround. They target the cell's nucleus instead, encouraging it to produce Complex-I-type proteins, which then enter the many mitochondria in the cell. It's not a completely new approach, but the study shows how it can be applied in the eye relatively easily.

Farrar's team mimicked LHON in mice by giving them a drug that inhibits Complex I. Through an injection into the eye, they then used a virus to deliver a gene from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) into the nucleus of the rodent retinal ganglion cells. The gene, NDI1, codes for a protein that works like mammalian Complex I.

The gene was switched on within the nucleus and the protein it made appeared to compensate for dysfunctional Complex I in the rodent mitochondria.

"In theory the system should rescue Complex I deficiency no matter what mutation was causing the original defect," says Farrar ? although there are no guarantees that this kind of treatment will work as well in humans as in mice.

The study expands the possibility of developing a treatment for LHON, says Jean Bennett at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the research.

"While there will likely be challenges encountered along the way ? including the potential of development of an immune response to the yeast protein ? the unequivocal successes in the small animal preclinical studies are encouraging."

Enterprise Eagle ford shale crude oil system receives first deliveries

Friday, June 08, 2012

Originating in Wilson County, Texas and extending 147 miles to Sealy, Texas, the 24-inch diameter crude oil pipeline has a capacity of 350,000 barrels per day ('BPD') and provides Eagle Ford Shale producers with improved access to the Gulf Coast refining complex.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Enterprise's general partner, A.J. 'Jim' Teague, said, 'Another impressive performance by our employees and contractors allowed us to bring this phase of the project on line in a safe and timely manner. Supported by long-term volume commitments from shippers, this extension of our integrated midstream network improves the ability of refineries to access reliable and secure supplies of domestic crude oil while facilitating continued development of the Eagle Ford Shale.'

A link to Enterprise's Rancho pipeline at Sealy allows the Eagle Ford crude oil system to reach the Gulf Coast infrastructure network, including Enterprise's ECHO crude oil storage facility under construction in southeast Houston. Initial operation is on schedule for July 2012, coinciding with the first deliveries of Eagle Ford Shale crude oil into the Houston area. As an important hub for handling growing domestic crude oil production, ECHO will ultimately provide shippers with access to approximately 4 million BPD of refining capacity.

Microsoft and Google play Do Not Track chicken

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Microsoft and Google are playing a high-stakes game of chicken over the controversial practice of advertisers following online users' footsteps across the Internet.

The battle is over how to implement "Do Not Track," a soon-to-be-released Web browser button that opts a user out of data collection on websites across all participating advertising networks.

After many years of skirmishes and compromises, Do Not Track appeared to have a quorum behind it. The proposal is currently backed by all the major browser makers, the Obama administration, and roughly 90% of the country's advertising networks and publishers, including Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500) and AOL (AOL).

Here's where it gets sticky: Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) announced last week that it would become the first browser maker to turn Do No Track on as the default setting in its upcoming version of Internet Explorer, called IE10.

That flew in the face of a carefully constructed and fragile compromise between privacy advocates and the online advertising networks.

Though privacy advocates believe that users would be best served by automatically opting them in to Do Not Track, the advertisers have said they would only agree to Do Not Track if the default setting is "off."

On Wednesday, a working group at the standards-setting World Wide Web Consortium affirmed its previously held agreement that Do Not Track should only be turned on if a user deliberately decides to do so.

In other words, W3C is backing the exact opposite of what Microsoft has planned for IE10.

That clash puts the advertising networks in a nasty bind. If Microsoft launches IE10 with Do Not Track turned on by default, it would be a non-compliant browser. Do the advertising networks still honor IE users' requests not to be tracked?

No agreement was reached, according to Jonathan Mayer, a Stanford privacy researcher and Do Not Track technology developer who was on a conference call held Wednesday between Do Not Track's key players.

Google, Yahoo, and many other advertisers and publishers argued that they shouldn't, Mayer said. Their postion is that a default setting is not representative of a user's choice.

"It's not clear to what extent we'll get an agreement on this," Mayer told CNNMoney. "One of Google's representatives said on the call that the company will be able to do whatever it wants anyways. I'm stunned at how transparent some of these companies were -- they just want to minimize the number of Do Not Track users, period."

A Google spokesman declined to comment for this story, but he did not dispute Mayer's characterization that the company and many other advertisers wish to ignore IE10's Do Not Track requests.

That would be a bold and risky move.

Do Not Track participation is voluntary, but once a company signs on -- as Google has -- compliance is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. Google could land in regulatory hell if the FTC decides that ignoring IE10 Do Not Track requests constitutes false advertising.

Microsoft noted that no final decision has been made by the W3C working group, and said it will continue to work with the organization on the issue.

"While we respect the W3C's perspective, we believe that a standard should support a 'privacy by default' choice for consumers," Microsoft Chief Privacy Officer Brendon Lynch said in a written statement.

A Microsoft spokesman declined to speculate on whether Microsoft would keep IE10's Do Not Track feature on by default even if that approach is deemed to be non-compliant with Do Not Track's official specification.

The irony of is that Microsoft and Google each play on both sides of this debate. They both make popular browsers and have large online ad networks.

Each has to make the choice: What matters more?

Microsoft appears to have consumers' backs on this one, but it also has a history of using privacy as a differentiator to try to keep its sinking browser market share from slipping even faster.

Meanwhile, Google -- the company with the famous "don't be evil" motto -- has had recent skirmishes with both Apple and Microsoft over its stealthy user tracking. It's also under the microscope in Washington, where the Federal Trade Commission is considering bringing sweeping antitrust charges against the company.

In this game of chicken, Microsoft and Google both hope they don't get run over.?To top of page
