The Daily Grind: What gaming-related choice would you have ...

If you're reading this, it's proof that the end of the Mayan calendar did not result in the end of civilization and the world. Shocking, really. But if it had ended yesterday, there are a few things that I really would have been sad about. I can just see myself looking at the rising waves of burning destruction and thinking that now I'd really never get a chance to play WildStar. And I'd be dead, but priorities.

So let's turn this over to you, dear readers. If the world had ended, as everything crumbled to ash, what gaming-related thing would you have regretted? Would you have wished that you had played Tabula Rasa when you had the chance? That you had specced for tanking instead of damage in Star Wars: The Old Republic? That you had waited until The Secret World was buy-to-play before picking up a copy? Or just that you hadn't tried to talk to your guild by voice chat while you were a bit tipsy?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Wall Street Journal finally comes to Newsstand

?

The Wall Street Journal finally comes to Newsstand

It took a long while, but The Wall Street Journal has finally come to Apple's iOS Newsstand. The paper joins thousands of other publications that are publishing via the magazine/newspaper service, and like many, the Journal's gone for a traditional layout that echoes that of the dead tree version. That said, the Newsstand distribution of the Journal is significantly more flexible than its paper cousin, offering full-screen image viewing, three text sizes, social network sharing options (that frustratingly don't use the built-in iOS sharing and require separate authorizations), and faster navigation between articles. It's not quite the authentically-digital that is The Magazine, but it's better than the PNG/JPG images that many publications are unfortunately vomiting into Newsstand.

The app uses a traditional newspaper-style layout, putting the headlines and preview ledes for multiple stories on a single page with an assortment of thumbnail images as well as larger stand-alone photos and videos (the only way you're getting video with the paper version is by using it as a massive flipbook). Navigation between pages of both the article preview grids and within the articles themselves is accomplished with a simple swipe to the left or right, though you'll have to contend with numerous fullscreen ads interspersed throughout. Apparently the $12.99 the paper asks per month for an iPhone subscription or the $21.99 a month they want if you want full access on an iPad (which also includes iPhone and website access) isn't enough to cover their needs, though it is worth noting that's the same price the Journal charges outside of the App Store system, and through Newsstand Apple's going to be taking a 30% cut. Additionally, the pinch gesture works as a back command, dropping you out of the article and into the previews, and from there to the 'start screen'.

As is standard for Newsstand subscriptions, the latest daily edition of The Wall Street Journal will download itself in the background. The Newsstand edition of the Journal also allows you to save articles for offline reading and offers up-to-the-second stock quotes and market news - it is The Wall Street Journal, after all. Many of the articles throughout the app are marked with little key icons, indicating that you're going to need a paid subscription to read them. There are still plenty of articles that aren't locked down, though those are mostly general news you can get anywhere and not the in-depth market and economic reporting for which the Journal is known.

By accepting the 30% cut demanded by Apple, The Wall Street Journal is acknowledging that they need to be present in full on smartphones and tablets like the iPhone and iPad. You're welcome to balk at the monthly cost of the subscription (especially if you're wanting to read the Journal on an iPad, as the same content is offered to smartphone users, it's just... smaller), but that's increasingly becoming the rule when it comes to 'old' media making the transition to new platforms.

The pregnant promise of fetal medicine

As prenatal diagnosis and treatment advance, we are entering difficult ethical territory

HAVING children is still a risky business, even in the west. Around 1 in 25 babies is born with a genetic disorder, and up to a quarter of infant deaths are caused by genetic diseases. The burden of suffering and trauma is immense.

But fetal medicine is advancing. Within 10 years we can expect fetal genome sequencing to be routine, which will improve diagnosis enormously. Options for treating diseases while a child is still in the womb are also set for rapid expansion (see "Fetal healing: Curing congenital diseases in the womb").

Given the option, most parents would probably prefer to know in advance if their child will be among the 1 in 25. But this knowledge will not necessarily end the suffering. If fetal sequencing becomes routine, diagnosis is likely to run ahead of treatment, with many more genetic defects being detectable than can be treated.

To put it in perspective, a recent study found that the average person carries around 400 potentially damaging DNA variants and that 1 in 10 people is at high risk of developing a genetic disease as a consequence (American Journal of Human Genetics, vol 91, p 1022).

That suggests prospective parents who choose fetal sequencing will be faced with a bewildering range of diagnoses, prognoses and treatment options, often for non-life-threatening conditions or ones that will only manifest later in their child's life. We may find ourselves hankering for a simpler time when only the most serious genetic disorders were diagnosable early on.

An even more difficult collective decision is looming: do we want to intervene in human evolution? The technology for genetically repairing the germ line - the fetal cells that go on to form sperm and eggs - is in development. That raises the prospect of being able to cure genetic diseases not just in one's own children, but in their children, and so on.

At present that is considered ethically unacceptable. But germ-line engineering could rid us of conditions such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. If the technology is there, surely the unethical option would be not using it? These are decisions for the future, but we need to start thinking about them now.

Does All Vermiculite Contain Asbestos? - Asbestos Removal Toronto

Last updated 3 hours 50 minutes ago

A single mine near Libby, Montana was the source of most of the vermiculite insulation used in North America throughout the 20th Century. The mine closed in 1990 due to contamination from a nearby asbestos deposit. If your home contains vermiculite insulation, you should always treat the material as if it contains asbestos. Read on to learn more about the risk of asbestos exposure due to vermiculite and always remember to call a certified contractor for professional vermiculite removal if you need to disturb your insulation in any way

How to Find Out if Your Home Contains Vermiculite Insulation

Vermiculite is a flaky, fire-resistant mineral that was used in the construction of new homes in Canada from 1919 to 1990. To find out if your home contains vermiculite, check your insulation. Being careful to keep the insulation secure, look for small brown or grayish nuggets with a spongy appearance. These are the vermiculite pellets. If your home contains vermiculite insulation, do not disturb it. Asbestos will not become airborne as long as the insulation is contained and secure.

Understanding the Health Risks

The health risks of asbestos exposure are many, especially in indoor environments. When materials containing asbestos are disturbed, the fibrous material becomes airborne and can find its way into the lungs. Asbestos fibers can remain trapped in the lungs for long periods of time, and may increase the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Exposure to asbestos can also heighten the risk of asbestosis, a condition that can cause lifelong lung damage.

When to Get Professional Vermiculite Removal

If you are beginning a home improvement project that involves interior demolition or cutting through ceilings or walls, it is a good idea to get your vermiculite insulation professionally removed. Never work with the insulation or attempt to remove it yourself, as this can increase your chances of harmful asbestos exposure.

Don?t take unnecessary risks with your next home improvement project. At Belanger Environmental, we specialize in professional asbestos and vermiculite removal for homeowners and businesses throughout the Toronto area. Call us at (519) 949-3322 for a free estimate.?

Tips On Getting Educational Jobs That Match Your Skills And ...

Being an educator can be one of the hardest jobs in the world. Still, the challenges of teaching don't deter those who have always looked forward to a worthwhile and enriching life of making a difference through education. The education sector marketplace is always teeming with qualified candidates who are not only based locally, but may also come from all over the world in search of the perfect global teaching posts. But seasoned educators will tell you that it's not about finding the best or the most perfect education jobs; the search should be about finding a position that will match your training and experience.

To find the job you'll most likely excel in, you can first look into the different roles that you can take as a member of the school staff. Finding the type of school that's right for your skills and personality can also boost your candidacy. You can be a primary, secondary, or special needs teacher in a public, private or progressive school. You can be a cover supervisor, a nursery nurse or a teaching assistant.

Another factor that will have a huge impact on your candidacy as well as teaching experience is the location. Being an educator offers you a chance to explore the world. The maths lessons you can teach in your area will be as relevant when you teach it to students in other countries. You can choose a school district near the university where you're finishing your post-graduate degree, or you can apply for a teaching job in a dream destination overseas. Choose the place where you think you'll be happiest in, and your students will also be glad to have a happy teacher like you.

Make sure you'll have more than the necessary requirements to ensure that you'll emerge as the best candidate for the position. Just like any job seeker, you need to get to know more about the position you're applying for, the school's values and culture, the academic approach and the student population. If you're a fresh graduate, you may want to boost your resume with actual teaching experiences you might have. Aside from your teaching degrees and licences, it will also be helpful to present voluntary positions where you can show the agency or school that you have actually had the chance to practice what you've learned in school.

Lastly, it's important to find a leading teaching agency to help you land the education positions that will be most suited to your competencies. A job placement agency focused on the education sector will help you consider the best approach in finding the right position that will be beneficial for you as a teacher, for the school you will serve, and for the students that you will connect with every day.

Reputable companies such as Twrecruitment UK can provide you with the assitance that you need to get the ideal edcucational job that will match your skills. With this you are sure that you have sufficient knowledge and expertise that can help children develop.

Prada opens outlet in Jinan ? China

Prada opens its first boutique in Jinan, China, inside the Inzone department store. Designed by architect Roberto Baciocchi, the new store covers a single level floorspace of 640 square meters dedicated to women?s and men?s clothing, bags, accessories and footwear collections.

The imposing external fa?ade, which pays tribute to artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, at its base shows a surface in black marble with big light boxes. A structure characterized by backlit golden and steel aluminium blades create an unusual kinetic effect of day and night lights, emphasized by the height and the different depths of the composition.

The internal storefront, embellished by black marble slabs and a regular geometry of polished steel profiles, has two entrances, light boxes and numerous shop windows.

In the areas dedicated to women?s and men?s bags and accessories, at the entrance of the shop, we find the distinguishing style elements of Prada stores worldwide: the chequered black and white Marquina marble flooring and walls panelled with pastel green fabric. The niches and the displays are enriched with polished steel profiles and saffiano cera leather or ebony wood shelves.

A refined and elegant space, with beige carpeting and green velvet couches, is the background to the women?s clothing and footwear collections, while the area dedicated to men, a space with decisively more regular shapes, shows ebony wood, polished steel, black saffiano leather and coypu-colour velvet sofas.

Prada wishes to express its admiration to the French-Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, one of the leaders of the kinetic art movement, an innovative form of dynamic expression with strong visual impact.

Having always greatly appreciated Carlos Cruz-Diez and his contribution to this artistic genre, Prada intends to pay public tribute to his work of art which was the starting point in the development of the Prada Jinan boutique fa?ade at Inzone, no. 66 Luoyuan Avenue, Lixia district, Jinan, P.R.China.

Renowned opera singer in Vienna going strong at 95

(AP) ? It was 1947 in post-war Vienna, and Hilde Zadek remembers taking a deep breath behind the curtain. A rookie on her first opera gig, she was about to sing the prestigious role of Aida for an audience full of particularly harsh critics ? whistle-packing Nazis she says were determined to show "that Jew from Palestine" she was not welcome at one of the world's greatest opera houses

But their whistles stayed silent, as Zadek celebrated her first on-stage triumph.

"At the end even they applauded and were my fans," recalls the 95-year diva with a chuckle, as she recounts a life of improbable turns from the time she fled Nazi Germany to that first performance in Vienna that launched the former shoe sales clerk's stellar opera career.

Sixty-five years later, Vienna has morphed from what she calls a post-war "nest of Nazis" replete with die-hard Hitler supporters into a city that has fully reckoned with its past. Austria's capital has compensated thousands of relatives of Holocaust victims and seldom misses an opportunity to honor their memory. After decades or denial, Vienna's municipal government now freely recognizes that the city ? and the nation ? were Hitler's eager accomplices.

As for Zadek, the city she once despised as part of Hitler's evil empire has long become a home she says she would never leave ? and one that is proud to call her its own. She has been showered with medals, granted high honorary titles and a singer's competition named after her 13 years ago has turned into an international launching pad for future opera stars.

"I live the life," she exults, eyes twinkling behind rimless glasses as she serves coffee in her high-ceilinged apartment at Vienna's tony 19th district. "I don't feel a trace of anti-Semitism. And I have long forgiven ? Vienna was a wonderful audience from the first moment on."

With even Viennese Nazis charmed by that first performance Zadek was unstoppable. By the time she stopped singing and turned to teaching in 1971, the spunky soprano was one of the world's leading divas, with 60 roles under her belt and thousands of appearances at the world's greatest opera houses. She still teaches today, equating voice coaching with a personal mission to pass on what she knows to a new generation.

If I had to give an accounting of myself up above and were asked 'what have you achieved,' then I would say, 'I have trained good voice teachers,'" she says.

The way to Vienna and operatic stardom was perilous.

It began in 1934, in Poznan. Now Polish, the city was then part of Germany, and like other German communities it was gripped by growing anti-Semitism that made life more and more intolerable for Jews.

"I was told often enough what a Jew is, including that they had deformed brains," she said. Kids were taken on school outings to see the Fuehrer and on one such occasion "I had the 'privilege' of seeing Herr Hitler, the 'joy' of breathing in his aura ? an ugly little gnome who did nothing else but scream with a face contorted by hate!"

One day, it all came to a head: "I knocked out a few front teeth of a school-mate after she said 'it stinks like Jews here,'" she said. "From that second on I had to leave Germany or I would have been jailed."

Zadek initially fled to Berlin; then a year later, at age 17, to what was then Palestine. She worked first in an orphanage, living in a small room with 16 of her charges before training as a pediatric nurse at a hospital. Life was hard, but safe ? unlike at home, where the Nazi vise was tightening around the Jews who remained.

Her father's four-story shoe emporium was destroyed in 1938 as Nazis rampaged, thrashing and torching Jewish businesses in what became known as "Kristallnacht" ? the "Night of Broken Glass." He was sent to a concentration camp shortly afterward.

Jews could still leave if they had elsewhere to go, and Zadek got her family visas for Palestine after her father was released. He opened a small shoe store and she left the hospital to work for him. At night she studied voice ? she had wanted to sing opera from childhood, but she said "nothing sang in me" from the time she fled Germany until that joyful family reunion.

"Then everything in me started singing again."

Her teachers were Austria's and Germany's best ? renowned Jewish voice coaches who fled to Palestine. At the same time, there were few prospects. There was no opera house ? and Zadek says that in British-ruled Palestine, singing in German, the language of much of the world's greatest operas, was prohibited.

Once the war was over, the young singer was accepted at the Zurich Conservatory. She paid her way to Europe on a British troop ship by singing to the soldiers. In Switzerland, she worked as an au pair, studied voice ? and through a chance acquaintanceship suddenly found herself singing for Vienna State Opera Director Franz Salmhofer, who invited her to come to a city still closely identified with the Nazis.

"I would have returned to Berlin as well, because I had only one goal; to become an opera singer," she said. "At the same time, I went through unbelievable emotional turmoil, not only because of my own doubts but because of what my family and friends in Palestine said. I was bad-mouthed from top to bottom for entering this 'nest of Nazis.'"

Looking back, she sees that her return was more than just about singing opera.

"I had to show that Jews don't stink, that they don't have hunched backs, long noses or anything else" branding them as subhuman under the Nazis, she said. "These young people aged 17, 18, who grew up under Hitler, had never seen a Jew in their lives! And then suddenly this young and good-looking woman comes onto the stage and then proceeds to sing beautifully and they ask 'this is a Jew?'"

"Forget the old Nazis," she said. "But I hope I was able at least to change the image ... for the youth."

The next day, she signed a contract with the Vienna opera that ended only when she stopped singing more than 20 years later. Top engagements followed at the Met in New York, London's Covent Garden and opera houses and festivals in Rome, Paris, Munich, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Glyndebourne and elsewhere, keeping her performing 12 months of the year ? and establishing her as one of her era's top divas.

As she progressed so did Austria ? from being home to the "nest of Nazis" ready to destroy her career for being Jewish, to a country that is proud to call her its own.

"Today? I am never attacked," she says, with a laugh. "I am overwhelmed with honors."

Mayor of Trenton pleads not guilty to corruption

TRENTON, New Jersey | Wed Dec 19, 2012 7:54pm EST

TRENTON, New Jersey (Reuters) - The mayor of Trenton, New Jersey's capital city, and two associates pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in a corruption case prosecutors say is laced with esoteric aliases, clandestine meetings and payments code-named Uncle Remus.

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, who still holds office, his brother Ralphiel Mack and a restaurant owner named Joseph Giorgianni appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp to enter their pleas.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Moran read out maximum penalties that could amount to 110 years in prison for Mayor Mack, 46, and his brother Ralphiel, 40, and 130 years for Giorgianni, who is 63 and appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Shipp set a trial date of February 19, though Mayor Mack's lawyer, Mark G. Davis, told reporters outside the courtroom he would probably ask for a postponement.

"I have not seen any evidence," Davis said. "Everyone is going to need more time, not just myself."

The lawyer ruled out any suggestion of a plea deal for Mayor Mack, and said the mayor had no plans to step down despite a call to do so by Gov. Chris Christie.

"He is going to keep his job until state law says otherwise," Davis said.

The three are charged in an eight-count federal indictment in what prosecutors say was a 2010 scheme to accept $119,000 in bribes so that Mayor Mack would help in the development of an automated parking garage on city-owned land. They were out on bail.

About $54,000 was actually paid, the indictment against the three said, with the rest to be paid later.

None of the defendants, all in business suits, spoke in court Wednesday, except to confirm arrangements for lawyers to represent them.

According to the indictment, a scheme was hatched to keep Mayor Mack from being caught. Money was channeled through Giorgianni and Ralphiel Mack, the indictment charged.

"They often used coded and cryptic language, including using the term 'Uncle Remus' to refer to the corrupt payments," the indictment charged.

Part of the effort to hide the scheme involved Giorgianni using the name "Mr. Baker" when sending text messages about the payments, prosecutors said.

Mayor Mack, not a tall man, was referred to as "the little guy" and "Napoleon." Giorgianni was also known as JoJo, which is the name of his Trenton steakhouse, and "the Fat Man," according to the indictment.

Prosecutors accuse the three of trying to conceal their activities by avoiding meetings in City Hall, which is near the federal courthouse, and instead gather at Giorgianni's residence, his steakhouse and restaurants in Atlantic City. (Editing by Daniel Trotta; Editing by M.D. Golan)

Differ Diets Strongly Oppose Ready-Meals New Study By Newcastle University

(PRWEB UK) 19 December 2012

Recent affairs have revealed that ready meals are healthier than those cooked fresh from a recipe book. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20713985.)

Ready meals can rarely be classified as ?healthy.? They contain unknown ingredients, plenty of preservatives and a shocking amount of salt per packet.

The study revealed by Newcastle University suggests that celebrity chefs? recipes are unhealthier as they contain more calories, saturated fat and sugar.

Whilst this may be true, the myth surrounding calories has long been debated and the quality of the food is subject to debate.

Some of the ingredients found in ready meals may include Annatto, Sulphur Dioxide and Xanthan Gum. In a very short but randomised sample by Differ Diets of 100 UK citizens, not one person knew what any of these ingredients were. This can be compared in stark contrast with meals prepared fresh at home with the knowledge of ingredients within the user?s control.

And don?t be fooled by the healthier ready meals. These can equally contain poor ingredients such as Sodium Triphosphate.

But what effect does this have on your body? Dr. Hadi explains:

?Preservatives and salt can have a large impact on water retention which is commonly referred to as the ?fat? that is lost on a crash diet. They can also impact the liver, your body?s filter system which prevents nasty toxins from entering the bloodstream.?

Home cooking might lead to greater calorie consumption but these calories are, the majority of the time, derived from natural ingredients and it is very well understood that protein and unsaturated fats are critical to weight loss or maintenance and still contain a high calorie/ gram ratio.

Dr. Hadi later suggests:

?Ready meals rarely contain any essential vitamins and minerals. These are normally removed during the preservation process.?

Most ready meals contain a source of simple carbohydrates which are, again, being blamed for a rise in obesity, particularly in children.

Records show that cooking has been an integral part of the human race, but consumption of ready meals has been a relatively recent invention.

Stuart Allen, Business Development Manager of Differ Diets, an online weight loss solution responsible for this strong opposition to ready-meals, reveals:

?Cooking fresh ingredients, regardless of their calories, is a better solution for anybody, whether dieting or not. This has been a critical factor to the development of the human race. Ready meals contain poor ingredients and there is no control as to what can be added and taken away.?

When cooking at home, there are simply ways of cutting down on calories, such as using less oil or butter, condiments or added sugar and salt.

Ultimately this depends on the readiness of the meal as some supermarkets are taking a step in the right direction by providing meals that, although not cooked, are in ready-made packaging to make the cooking process easier.

MSNBC's Perry In a 'Mushy Mess' Over LGBT Wedding

Far-left MSNBC weekend host Melissa Harris-Perry is no fan of marriage. The whole business is simply an act of ?conspicuous consumption under the guise of tradition and love," she scoff. But the cynical feminist in her finds herself reduced to a ?mushy mess when it comes to two fantastic people finding genuine happiness ? and deciding to celebrate.? But that couple in question, naturally, is a same-sex couple, one half of which is, wait for it, transgendered.

According to gay rights group GLAAD:

Scout and Liz, an LGBT couple whose engagement at the White House's LGBT Pride reception went viral in an online video were married last week. Scout, a transgender man, proposed to his partner Liz Margolies in June before a cheering crowd. The couple's engagement video has received more than 75,000 views on YouTube and sparked comments of support, as well as some unfortunate anti-LGBT bias.

Several months later, the couple was married by an LGBT-affirming rabbi in New York City. Scout and Liz wanted their wedding to serve as a message for LGBT youth who had been inspired by the story of their engagement, but were then discouraged by the uproar from anti-LGBT voices.

Harris-Perry concluded by saying ?come June [2013] we can only hope the Supreme Court sees a place for more Scout and Lizs in this country.?

So Long, 2012: Analyzing The Evolving Mobile ... - Marketing Land

As we prepare for a new year in the online marketing world, it?s interesting to reflect on where 2012 has brought us. The Web experienced another year of fantastic growth. In the US alone, over 240 million consumers now access the Web ? a market penetration of 78%.

This overall growth is driven by an equally impressive increase in mobile usage. In many parts of the world, mobile phones have long been the primary means for people to access the Internet. Now, that?s becoming true in the US, as well.

By Q4 2012, the US saw over 170 million smartphone subscribers, meaning smartphone owners are now the majority. This massive level of market penetration casts ripples across the Web. In November 2012, over a quarter of all Web traffic on the Chitika Advertising Network originated from mobile devices (both smartphones and tablets).

Consumers can now check social networks, watch the latest YouTube video, and even make a purchase ? all from their mobile devices.

In a study published in July 2012, Chitika Insights found tablet usage to spike by almost 95% during prime time TV hours. This stat is highly indicative of elevated use of second screen devices. These are some of the larger scale trends that signify the coming change across the traditional online landscape as it becomes increasingly more mobile.

In the face of a shifting online environment ? split between diverging mobile platforms ??Chitika Insights conducted a research study to isolate click-through-rates (CTR) of the major mobile operating systems.

The data used in this study was drawn from the Chitika Advertising Network from November 24th to November 30th 2012. This sample was composed of tens of millions of mobile impressions from the US and Canada.

If you are an advertiser or marketer doing business online, the following statistics and analysis will help you best capitalize on these developments:

Based on the chart above, we can see that the iOS user base holds the keys to the proverbial mobile kingdom with an average CTR of 0.92%. Compared to the average Android CTR of 0.86%, iOS users click on ads approximately 7% more frequently than Android users.

As growing mobile volume increases the potential impact of mobile traffic on the bottom line, new opportunities emerge for advertisers and marketers to maximize the ROI of their campaigns.

Recent data from the IAB shows that overall mobile advertising spend grew 95% from $636 million during the first half of 2011 to $1.2 billion during the same period in 2012.

With these impressive growth rates, mobile advertising is clearly the way of the future and a method of reaching out to audiences that advertisers and marketers simply cannot afford to ignore.

Fancy Google Water Bottle

Ade Oshineye was invited to the Google/YouTube Christmas Party for YouTube's creative community and he took some sweet pictures of the event. One picture that stood out to me was that Google had their own branded glass water bottles.

Ade Oshineye posted a picture of it on Google+ along with tons of other pictures, including a Google Santa.

Mobile marketing is one of the newest types of marketing, yet it actually incorporates elements of some of the oldest and well proven methods. Many of the same rules that apply to other kinds of marketing will apply to mobile marketing too. However, there are some noteworthy differences. This article presents some solid advice on getting the best from this brilliant advertising medium.

Consumers are looking for a specific value from your mobile marketing campaign. When you are expanding outside of your friendship circle, you need to grab their attention. For example, you may want to entice executives with a voucher for a fine dining establishment. On the other hand, send a product designed for children if you are targeting families.

Offer savings and special offers to customers who sign up for your mobile campaign. Mention it on your website, in ads and on various social networks. Prove that you can help people, and they will be eager to sign up. Present it as a popular and fun way of staying updated about your offers.

TIP! Consider implement many marketing pieces at a time as a means to maximize your mobile marketing strategy. Try sending a flyer in the postal mail to let your customer know about an upcoming sale.

Anything that you do on terms of mobile marketing needs to be simple and easy so as not to drive away the end user. It is much easier to fill out a lengthy form on a PC than it is to do so on a small, limited smartphone keypad. Make it easy to add oneself to your mailing list.

Test for usability, it only takes a few moments! It will allow you to make sure your audience can view the material you are going to send out. You can recruit family, friends and colleagues to receive your test messages to ensure that your campaign is going to work with a variety of mobile devices.

Make sure that your emails can be viewed easily from most mobile devices. This increases the success you have with your mobile marketing campaign. This can be accomplished through clickable phone numbers, pages with navigation tabs, and other features that make your site easy to navigate on a mobile phone or device. Many people deal with email on their phones and smaller devices these days, and your mobile campaigns should reflect that.

TIP! When you are thinking of adding SMS to a mobile marketing strategy, let people opt in or out and tell them how many texts you?re going to be sending out. Because SMS requires access to the notification system of a user?s mobile device, it can have disastrous results if abused or used inappropriately.

Standalone mobile platforms need to have home bases if they are to succeed. Your strategies with mobile marketing should focus on getting people to and keeping people in your home base. Your business should be focused around your home base, not around your mobile platform. The two of these should complement each other.

Investing money is probably the best way to optimize your site for mobile usage in this type of marketing. Creating an attractive and appealing mobile site can be incredibly difficult. For best results, it is best to outsource this task to someone who is qualified to do it.

Changes in your market will dictate changes in your customer base. You can gain or lose customers based on outside influences that you cannot control. Always stay current with the newest technology out there or your business may suffer. Customers are always looking for the next best thing.

TIP! Send a reminder to your mobile marketing list a few hours before a sale or event begins on your website. Dropping friendly reminders like this can keep people from missing your big events.

Get some of your friends to help test your emails, site, ads, and other aspects of your campaign. If you need unbiased opinions, you can hire testers.

Try to limit your offers to only the very best. You don?t want to discourage your customers by bugging them all the time with messages, you want visibility so don?t be shy but manage your messaging as well.

If you make it easy to share your mobile marketing, your clients probably will. Test the campaign out first and make sure it is simple to forward. This is one of the best ways to spread the word about your company and simplicity is key. In fact, you should give users an incentive to forward your communications.

TIP! A simple, straightforward approach is the best. Keep the number of hoops that a customer has to click through to a minimum to ensure your success.

When working to develop a mobile marketing strategy, do not leave the people who have older phones out of your plans. Most smart phones can access full websites, but you should still update your mobile website regularly. If you have components on your website that are not view-able on older phones, be sure to have a mobile version.

Mobile marketing invites a world of possibilities, but when used improperly, it can quickly become an irritant. Adopt a methodical approach to using the tips you learned here today, especially if you are new to mobile marketing. This approach will help you to gain new customers.

TIP! Make sure all your content is as brief and concise as it can be, this will help your mobile marketing as a whole as people can understand what you have available. Send a clear message your audience can understand quickly.

NJ's online gaming bill ?outrageous,? says horseman | Meadowlands ...

For all the talk about New Jersey?s attempt to allow internet casino gambling, there hasn?t been as much talk about the distinction between the bill that has been batted about in Congress and the Jersey version.

Well, Meadowlands Racetrack operator Jeff Gural is eager to make that distinction. Gural is fine with Congress?s ?internet poker-only? version. But the bill that passed in the Assembly?

?Outrageous,? says Gural:

Gural told me that he considers online poker to be a game of skill, and thus not a competition for casual gambling dollars that might come to the racetrack. But online slots and roulette? That has him hopping mad, as you can see from the story.

Rep. Tim Scott picked to replace DeMint in Senate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Rep. Tim Scott to the U.S. Senate on Monday, making him the South's first black Republican senator since Reconstruction in a state whose politics is steeped in the history of slavery and Civil War.

"It speaks to the evolution of South Carolina and our nation," Scott, 47, said of his appointment to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Jim DeMint, a conservative who reigned his post with four years left in his second term to head a right-leaning think tank.

Haley, a daughter of Indian immigrants who became South Carolina's first female and minority governor in 2010, acknowledged making history with her appointment, but she stressed that she picked Scott for his conservative values.

"He earned this seat for what I know he's going to do in making South Carolina and our country proud," she said.

Scott, 47, will be sworn in Jan. 3. Senate Republicans welcomed the appointment, which comes more than a month after Republicans' poor performance with minorities in the election forced soul-searching in the party to broaden its appeal.

He'll become only the fourth black Republican in Senate history and the only black Republican in Congress, after Rep. Allen West of Florida lost his re-election bid last month.

"This is truly an historic moment for the Palmetto State from a governor who's broken more than a few barriers in her own career," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., one of two Hispanics in the Senate, called Scott "a passionate, thoughtful and sincere advocate for the people of South Carolina and for limited government principles."

Scott is certain to be front and center when Republicans talk about fiscal matters and other issues vital to the conservative base. It remains to be seen what committee assignments he will get. He had served on the House Rules Committee.

Scott's selection culminates a fast rise through South Carolina politics. Just four years ago, he was chairman of the Charleston County Council. The 2008 election made him the first black Republican in the South Carolina Legislature in more than a century, and in 2010, he won his seat in the U.S. House from his conservative coastal district with 65 percent of the vote.

Outside the Statehouse where Scott spoke, a statue still stands of post-Reconstruction former governor and U.S. senator Ben Tillman, who unapologetically advocated lynching any black who tried to vote. Another statue depicts the late Strom Thurmond, who still holds a record for a 24-hour filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

But Scott has never dwelled on his race.

"I've never heard on the campaign trail, 'Besides the fact you're black or because you're black, here's what we want of you.' They asked me questions about values and issues, and that's an amazing thing. It speaks to the evolution of South Carolina and our nation," Scott said.

Scott will serve for two years and then face an election in November 2014. That would give South Carolina two Senate elections: one for Scott and the other for two-term Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.

"I have no doubt he'll fly through 2014," Haley said of Scott.

Scott said he still believes in term limits and would likely limit himself to two terms in the Senate, starting with 2014.

After asking for a moment of silence for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting, Scott said he accepted the challenge of trying to help the country through troubling times.

"Our nation finds itself in a situation we need backbone. We need to make some very difficult decisions," Scott said. "I learned early in my 20s that if you have a problem with spending, there's not enough revenue to make up for it. We have a spending problem in America."

Scott grew up in poverty in North Charleston. His parents divorced when he was 7, and he remembered his mom working 16 hours a day to support him and his brother.

"To the single moms out there, don't give up on your kids. It may get tough. It may be challenging, but all things are truly possible," he said.

In high school, he said he was failing four courses and in danger of "flunking out of high school" until he met the late John Moniz, a conservative entrepreneur who ran a Chick-fil-A beside the movie theater where Scott worked.

They became friends and Scott said Moniz taught him important values and basic business principles.

Scott earned a degree in political science from Charleston Southern University, which is affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention and touts how it integrates faith into learning and serving.

Graham, South Carolina's senior senator, said Scott has a unique opportunity to inspire others and be a leading voice for the conservative cause.

"When it comes to trying to explain what America's all about, I could not tell a better story than the story of Tim Scott," Graham said. "Tim is what America's all about."

The governor won't name a replacement for Scott. By state law, U.S. House vacancies are filled through a special election.

Social media quick to judge, slow to absolve shooter's brother

1 day

Though much of the story surrounding Friday's horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., remains mystifying, one thing is clear: Ryan Lanza is not the shooter. Contrary to early reports from officials, the shooter has now been identified as?Lanza's brother, Adam, now counted?among the dead, along with their mother.

But for several hours, the name Ryan Lanza was synonymous with the heinous killing spree, and a jury of Internet denizens had him?condemned as a murderer. And why not? All of the major news outlets had declared it so, citing a credible source, and Lanza's name blazed in headlines.

Almost immediately, websites ? homing in on a publicly viewable Facebook profile ? took screen grabs of the page to illustrate news stories, identifying him as the deceased killer.

It's understandable, if not all the more tragic, why the Internet cabal stormed his Facebook profile. The?shooter was identified as a man with his exact name, who lived in Hoboken, N.J. (where threads of the crime were being investigated)?and hailed from Newtown, Conn.?This was the same information that appeared on Lanza's Facebook profile, easily accessible?by searching the social network, or just Google.

Soon, Ryan?Lanza's photo became a vent for the angry, grieving populace. The four publicly available images of Ryan Lanza spread quickly across the Internet, cross-posted on?Facebook more than 11,000 times, and who knows how many more by old-fashioned copy-and-paste. The shared images were accompanied by death threats and other violent admonishments for what angry Facebook users assumed to be his crimes,?no matter that Lanza was, at this point,?reportedly dead.?

One Twitter user observed the absurdity of how we process the incomprehensible, via the Internet: "The craziest thing about people tweeting to the wrong Ryan Lanza: Even if it were the correct Ryan Lanza, you realize he's dead, right?"

Only he wasn't dead. At least not according to posts being made to his Facebook page by someone claiming to be him, declaring his innocence.

"IT WASN'T ME!" Lanza posted, one of a steady stream of friends-only status updates (which we independently?verified via one of Lanza's friends)?denying his connection to the slaughter. ?I?m on the bus home now, it wasn?t me,? read another post.?

Just as?he was learning that two members of his immediate family were dead, and the things his brother had allegedly done, Ryan Lanza was compelled to prove his own innocence to both the media and an acrimonious Internet (not to mention to law enforcement).

He's not the first to face this surreal experience unique to the Internet age.?There's very little that's fresh about this cyber-flash mob against the wrongly accused, only of late we've mostly seen simpler cases of social-network mistaken identity.

Following the mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., last July, Facebook users who shared a name with the accused, James Holmes, were besieged with both friend requests and threats posted to their profiles. The year before, a man named Casey Anthony repeatedly told the Facebook users posting threats on his wall that he's not the female Casey Anthony acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter.?

This Friday, a Twitter user with the handle @Ryan__Lanza started the day with a handful of followers, and by the evening had more than four thousand. "haha i didnt kill anyone, stop spamming my twitter please. and all my other tweets were just jokes because i only had around 20 followers," read one of the tweets addressing the issue.

But unlike those incidents, the indiscriminate hate splattered under Ryan Lanza's photo is compounded by his tragic connection to this horrific crime. It's not a case of mistaken identity with a stranger; this is his brother.

Before the?simultaneity of the Internet age, police could misidentify a suspect, but it would take weeks, and often an arrest, before the innocent party suffered a very public backlash. In 1990, Ed Humphrey, then a 19-year-old student at the University of Florida in Gainesville, was wrongly?accursed?of horrific mutilations later attributed to serial killer Danny Rolling. It took three and a half years before Humphrey was?exonerated?by the police, but not until?after his character?was obliterated, and he'd been described as a "monster" ??or worse ??in national media.?

With Ryan Lanza, it took only hours.

Those not satisfied to throw epithets at Ryan Lanza's photos launched Facebook Pages under the name, some using photos from his profile. After the shooter was clarified, "Adam Lanza" pages popped up, but some of those?used Ryan's photo as the profile picture.?The Internet reacted as it has many times ?before, violently lashing out like a cracked whip, then?snapping back painfully after the misinformation is revealed.?

Ryan Lanza's name has not?yet been cleared in every corner. At time of publication, his photo was still being shared regularly, accompanied by hateful accusations across the globe, in?languages?ranging from Spanish?to Arabic,?and as far?off as Korea.?All of this,?despite the fact that every major news outlet had clarified that the accused killer was Ryan's?deceased brother, Adam Lanza.

Scientists 'surprised' to discover very early ancestors survived on tropical plants, new study suggests

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Researchers involved in a new study led by Oxford University have found that between three million and 3.5 million years ago, the diet of our very early ancestors in central Africa is likely to have consisted mainly of tropical grasses and sedges. The findings are published in the early online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

An international research team extracted information from the fossilised teeth of three Australopithecus bahrelghazali individuals -- the first early hominins excavated at two sites in Chad. Professor Julia Lee-Thorp from Oxford University with researchers from Chad, France and the US analysed the carbon isotope ratios in the teeth and found the signature of a diet rich in foods derived from C4 plants.

Professor Lee-Thorp, a specialist in isotopic analyses of fossil tooth enamel, from the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, said: "We found evidence suggesting that early hominins, in central Africa at least, ate a diet mainly composed of tropical grasses and sedges. No African great apes, including chimpanzees, eat this type of food despite the fact it grows in abundance in tropical and subtropical regions. The only notable exception is the savannah baboon which still forages for these types of plants today. We were surprised to discover that early hominins appear to have consumed more than even the baboons."

The research paper suggests this discovery demonstrates how early hominins experienced a shift in their diet relatively early, at least in Central Africa. The finding is significant in signalling how early humans were able to survive in open landscapes with few trees, rather than sticking only to types of terrain containing many trees. This allowed them to move out of the earliest ancestral forests or denser woodlands, and occupy and exploit new environments much farther afield, says the study.

The fossils of the three individuals, ranging between three million and 3.5 million years old, originate from two sites in the Djurab desert. Today this is a dry, hyper-arid environment near the ancient Bahr el Ghazal channel which links the southern and northern Lake Chad sub-basins. However, in their paper the authors observe that at the time when Australopithecus bahrelghazali roamed, the area would have had reeds and sedges growing around a network of shallow lakes, with floodplains and wooded grasslands beyond.

Previously, it was widely believed that early human ancestors acquired tougher tooth enamel, large grinding teeth and powerful muscles so they could eat foods like hard nuts and seeds. This research finding suggests that the diet of early hominins diverged from that of the standard great ape at a much earlier stage. The authors argue that it is unlikely that the hominins would have eaten the leaves of the tropical grasses as they would have been too abrasive and tough to break down and digest. Instead, they suggest that these early hominins may have relied on the roots, corms and bulbs at the base of the plant.

Professor Lee-Thorp said: "Based on our carbon isotope data we can't exclude the possibility that the hominins' diets may have included animals that in turn ate the tropical grasses. But as neither humans nor other primates have diets rich in animal food, and of course the hominins are not equipped as carnivores are with sharp teeth, we can assume that they ate the tropical grasses and the sedges directly."
