Scoreless?draw puts Sounders into playoffs

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:26 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Michael Gspurning made three saves for his sixth shutout of the season as the Seattle Sounders played to a scoreless draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night, clinching a Western Conference playoff berth.

The Sounders (13-7-10) are assured of finishing no worse than fourth in West.

Vancouver (10-12-9) extended its winless streak to seven games (0-5-2), but gained a valuable point as it tries to hold on to the conference's fifth and final playoff spot.

Gspurning got the shutout only after Camilo missed a chance from close range in the game's final seconds. Gspurning also stopped Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit in stoppage time.

Vancouver's Brad Knighton had three saves for his first shutout of the season. His most important stop came in the 88th minute as he dropped to block second-half substitute Steve Zakuani's shot from about 20 yards out.

Vancouver lost top scorer Darren Mattocks and midfielder John Thorrington to injuries in the first half.

The Sounders controlled most of the early play. Osvaldo Alonso fired just wide of the net in the 12th minute, and the Sounders almost scored off a quick counter-attack following a Vancouver corner kick three minutes later.

Knighton had to stop Fred Montero from about 30 yards out in the 28th minute.

Seattle had a dangerous chance early in the second half when Eddie Johnson fired a shot from six yards in the 55th minute that was kicked out by Knighton.

Huge X-Wing-Like Cargo Ship Undocks from Space Station

An unmanned European cargo ship the size of a double-decker bus undocked from the International Space Station Friday (Sept. 28), ending a six-month delivery flight to the orbiting lab.

The robotic Automated Transfer Vehicle 3 (ATV-3), with its four X-wing-like solar arrays unfurled, cast off from the space station Friday as the two spacecraft sailed 255 miles (410 kilometers) over western Kazakhstan in Asia. The cargo ship's undocking occurred at 5:44 p.m. EDT (2144 GMT).

The space departure occurred three days later than planned due to delays, first by a computer glitch and later by space junk near the space station.

But Friday, the ATV-3 spacecraft, which is named the Edoardo Almadi after the famed late Italian physicist of the same name, made a flawless departure from the station. It will spend the next few days orbiting Earth before being intentionally destroyed on Tuesday (Oct. 3) by burning up in Earth's atmosphereover the Pacific Ocean. [Photos: Europe's Robotic ATV Spaceships]

"Today, everything has worked to perfection," NASA spokesman Rob Navias said during the agency's live broadcast of the undocking.

The ATV-3 spacecraft was built by the European Space Agency and delivered 7.2 tons of food, water and other vital supplies to astronauts aboard the International Space Station when it launched in March from a South American spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The ATV-3 spent 184 linked to the space station before being packed with trash and other unneeded items for its eventual fiery demise in Earth's atmosphere.?

The ATV-3 is ESA's third unmanned cargo ship mission to visit the space station, which is also supplied by robotic cargo ships from Japan and Russia. In the United States, NASA has contracted two companies ? SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., and Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp. ? to provide unmanned cargo delivery flights to the station. The first official flight by SpaceX is scheduled to launch on Oct. 7, when the company

The ATV craft are huge cylinders 32 feet long (10 meters) and nearly 15 feet wide (4.5 m) and may be visible by observers on Earth as a bright moving light in the night sky, weather permitting. The ATV-3, like the International Space Station, can be spotted if you know where to look.

To find out if the ATV-3 will be flying over your location, visit one of these websites and enter the information for your location:

The European Space Agency is also holding a photo contest for satellite trackers hoping to snap a photo of the ATV-3 as it orbits the Earth during the next few days. Prizes will be awarded for the best snapshots.

"We look forward to seeing any and all photos of ATV in free flight and we wish you happy snapping for the contest!" ESA officials said in blog post.

For more info on the ESA's photo contest for the ATV-3 spacecraft, visit: http://blogs.esa.int/atv/2012/09/28/atv-orbital-photo-contest-orbit-details/

The next ATV to launch toward the space station will be the ATV-4 Albert Einstein, which is slated to blast off in April 2013.

Make A Difference To Your Social Media Marketing: Use These Tips ...

One new and exciting way to market your business and attract new customers is through social media. Many businesses do not yet have a presence on social media which will allow you to try social media and reach customers that your competitors are not yet reaching. This article contains some tips about how you can utilize social media to your advantage before your competitors.

Followers can easily share your content with Facebook. For example, if someone leaves a comment on your site saying he really likes Acme brand red widgets, the commenter?s friends will all see that information. Encourage people to participate and engage with each other.

Develop a real vision of yourself online, but keep in mind that your goal is to create a profitable company. You don?t want people to question your expertise, so don?t make unproven or controversial claims. Your videos and content should be relevant and not offensive to your readers. At the same time, add your own voice to them. You will have one very unique profile for SMM.

TIP! You want the content you post to be easily passed on by your subscribers to their network of friends. You should always include a Facebook share button on the top or bottom of your posts.

Social Media

In order to increase your customers? desire towards your social media pages, have exclusive offers that they can only obtain by following you. If they only see special promotions through Facebook, then it becomes a great marketing tool where people will help you advertise through these social media sites.

Identify your competitors. Then look at the specific ways in which they are adjusting themselves to use social media. By seeing what they?re doing and what?s working on their end, you will get a better idea of the direction you need to go in. Apply the methods that seem to work best with your target audience, and do your best to stay ahead of your competitors.

TIP! You can maintain interest in your page by automating Twitter. Automation can be set up on your Twitter and it will allow you to auto-tweet things like blog posts from other people.

Don?t expect customers to share a lot of information when they first visit your site. Consumers are busy and often do not have time to answer detailed surveys or supply large amounts of information immediately upon entering your site. You also risk losing their trust if you ask for too much right away. Make their early experience pleasant and grow it from there gradually; earn their trust and they?ll stick around.

You can promote sales and offers through your social media sites. Something like a buy-one-get-one offer, a 50% discount, or even a prize drawing can bring people to your site in droves. Social media needs to be seen as a chance for customers to receive more information about you and to be more involved with you and your brand and products.

Social Media

TIP! You can now link all your blog posts to LinkedIn. Every time you post an article, it will be shared on LinkedIn.

Be careful with the voice you use when advertising using social media channels. While social media networks give you the ability to interact with your customers on a more personal level, maintain your professional demeanor. This is why your voice should be at your readers? level. Use their language in order to have greater results.

Make Facebook or Foursquare friends into customers by working your profile in a professional, yet engaging way. Let them know about new locations or discounts you have going on. Offer them exclusive coupons or limited offers reserved for your Facebook fans. Generally, there must be some incentive for people to add you or subscribe to you on Facebook.

Select good titles when posting content on Youtube or any other social sites. Your titles should contain keywords relevant to your products and industry. If the video has real value, it should be easy to find by attaching significant keywords that you know your visitors will use.

TIP! Do not post raving about your product constantly. Hit a balance between letting people know what you and your business are up to and showing an interest in the concerns of your readers.

Just because increased profits are usually attained during the holidays, you should not shift away from your customers at that time of year. The reality is that you should give them more focus so that they can get more in a holiday mood. Give your communications a sense of fun and have several options ready. Your visitors will find your enthusiasm contagious!

Let followers know about different milestones you reach. One example can be to let people know when you?ve reached one of your goals. Make sure you thank people for showing interest in your work and talk about your experience with social medias. Articles like this tend to go viral very fast.

Social Media Marketing

TIP! If your business is of a home-based nature, don?t use autoresponders or bots to post to your social media pages. Some people will balk at the idea of an auto responder sending out those cookie-cutter responses instantaneously.

Social media marketing uses the same basic principles as any other type of marketing, however, the majority of businesses have not yet realized the full potential of using the social media arena for marketing. Use the tips in this article as part of your ongoing education about how to effectively use social media marketing for your

VASCO expands its MYDIGIPASS.COM platform - Business Review ...

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill., and ZURICH, Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- VASCO Data Security International, Inc. (Nasdaq: VDSI) (www.vasco.com), a leading software security company specializing in strong authentication products and services, strengthens its MYDIGIPASS.COM platform by adding a launch pad and a marketplace. By adding these two features, MYDIGIPASS.COM becomes even more attractive to ASPs allowing them to increase their revenue, improve their security and add extra value to their website. To access the personal launch pad, a user only has to activate his/her profile on the MYDIGIPASS.COM portal (www.mydigipass.com).

The launch pad is a central place where users can quickly access all their personal applications and internet websites. On the market place users can look for MYDIGIPASS.COM secured applications and bookmarks to the most popular websites, and add them to their personalized launch pad.

In April 2012, VASCO launched its MYDIGIPASS.COM platform. It is a hosted consumer authentication platform, providing convenient and secure login services to various web applications. ASPs can add strong two-factor authentication in a straightforward and cost-efficient manner while at the same time providing their end-users with secure access to secluded content and online accounts in a most convenient way. Adding extra features to the platform supports VASCO's goal to make MYDIGIPASS.COM omnipresent.

ASPs can offer their end-users a secure online platform with a very user-friendly interface that is also fit for mobile devices. The launch pad will give the end-user a clear overview of his/her applications secured by MYDIGIPASS.COM. All he will have to do, is go to VASCO's market place, look for his favorite online applications and add them to his own personal launch pad. In a later phase bookmarks will also be added.

One of the great advantages for ASPs is that they no longer have to worry about password management. MYDIGIPASS.COM offers strong two-factor authentication with one-time passwords (OTPs), which means end-users no longer have to remember static passwords. This helps to decrease help desk costs since ASPs will not have to help end-users who forgot or lost their passwords. Furthermore, it eliminates the necessity of a secure infrastructure to keep the static passwords safe. VASCO takes care of all the online security issues while ASPs can focus on their core business.

A second advantage is that the conversion rate will improve. A lot of websites experience that consumers do not like to re-enter all their credentials when they want to create a new online account. This often results in a consumer not creating a new account just to avoid this. Once a consumer is part of the MYDIGIPASS community, their credentials are securely saved in the cloud. When he then wants to create a new online account from a website that supports MYDIGIPASS.COM, all the end-user has to do is to choose which personal credentials he wishes to share when creating the new account, instead of re-entering all the information again.

Additionally, adding MYDIGIPASS.COM will increase customer loyalty. By being part of the MYDIGIPASS.COM community, the launch pad gives the end-user a very clear overview of his current online accounts. By creating this overview, the consumer will use the displayed accounts more frequently than other websites available on the Internet. MYDIGIPASS.COM is also a security label which offers highly secure access to online accounts and will help build consumers' trust in websites.

"We are pleased to see that our MYDIGIPASS.COM community is growing and that we are improving our service on a daily basis," says T. Kendall Hunt, VASCO's Chairman and CEO. "By adding new functionalities like the launch pad and a VASCO market place, we make MYDIGIPASS.COM even more attractive to ASPs."

Oil prices rise after 3 days of declines

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil is up more than $2 per barrel after three straight days of declines as weekly unemployment claims in the United States fell to their lowest level in two months.

Benchmark oil gained $2.09 to $92.07 per barrel just after 1 p.m. Eastern time. The last time crude settled with a bigger gain was Aug. 3.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits plunged 26,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 359,000, the lowest level in nine weeks. Weekly unemployment applications are a measure of the pace of layoffs. Any sign of an improving economy can drive energy prices up.

The market gains started earlier in Asia, helped by expectations the People's Bank of China will soon take more steps to stimulate the world's No. 2 economy.

Oil has dropped $9 per barrel in the last two weeks following the announcement of new economic stimulus measures by the Federal Reserve.

The price of gasoline fell a penny to $3.795 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. It's down about 4 cents from a month ago.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, gained $2.11 to $112.15 on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

In other trading:

? Heating oil rose 5 cents to $3.15 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 4 cents to $2.92 per gallon.

? Natural gas added 8 cents to $3.29 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Southeast Asian scientists look to reinvent the flush toilet

The 200-year-old flush toilet requires a substantial amount of infrastructure, which is expensive to build and run. Innovative toilets could be a source of energy while dramatically improving sanitation.

By Thin Lei Win,?AlertNet / September 27, 2012

Indonesians use public toilets in a slum area of the capital, Jakarta. The Asian Institute for Technology has received a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to design toilets that could produce electricity or gas and improve sanitation, reducing illnesses and deaths.

Their aim is to create a toilet that will process wastewater in family homes and convert it into gas or electricity, saving families money and protecting them from deadly diseases caused by poor sanitation.

The Bangkok-based Asian Institute for Technology (AIT)?is receiving a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the project, part of an estimated $380 million effort by the foundation to tackle sanitation problems in Asia and Africa.?

RELATED: Top 10 nations lacking toilets

?The [flush] technology that we?ve been using so far is 200 years old already ? It hasn?t really been improved at all [since],? Thammarat Koottatep, an environmental engineer and associate professor at AIT, said at the AIT project?s launch Sept. 24.?

The current flush toilet requires a substantial amount of sewage infrastructure, which is expensive to build and run. The technology for re-using and recycling the byproducts of animal waste is already available and used in industry but has not yet been applied to toilets, Thammarat said.?

Severe diarrhea caused by poor sanitation kills 1.5 million children worldwide each year, according to the Gates Foundation.??

According to the East Meets West Foundation, a US nongovernmental organization and another recipient of Gates Foundation?s sanitation funds, 50 percent of households in Vietnam and around 80 percent of households in Cambodia do not have sanitation facilities.?

Almost 99 percent of people in Thailand have access to toilets, said Thammarat, yet the issue is not just about access but also of efficient disposal of waste afterward.?

?Safe sanitation means you should be able to reduce the contaminants or the pollutants after flushing the toilet,? and Thailand has not reached that stage, he said.?

Thailand produces 20 million cubic meters (5.3 billion gallons) - the equivalent of 8,000 Olympic swimming pools - of domestic wastewater per day, according to AIT. But only 1.6 million cubic meters are collected in sewer networks and sent to treatment plants, many of which do not function.?

Less than 10 percent of the 60,000 tons of fecal sludge collected per day is treated correctly.

?We have a problem of contamination, very highly polluted rivers and canals,? leading to foul-smelling waterways especially in the dry season, said Thammarat.?

The key to providing extensive and safe sanitation coverage in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam is to focus on decentralized systems, he said, often called septic or onsite systems, that focus at the household level.?

Here, wastewater is treated close to the source, typically on the property of individual homes or businesses and saves owners the cost of connecting to a sewage system and eliminates the environmental burden of transporting large quantities of wastewater to a treatment plant.?

In August, East Meets West received $10.9 million from the Gates Foundation, also to improve sanitation and hygiene practices, but this time among the rural poor in Vietnam and Cambodia.?

Open defecation and the unsafe disposal of human waste in these two countries result in an estimated 17,000 deaths annually, 90 percent of which occur in children under age five, East Meets West said.

East Meets West?s program includes access to credible sources of financing for families to install latrines and hand-washing devices in their homes and conditional cash transfers to communes that achieve at least a 30 percent increase in sanitation coverage.?

?The system we have [the flush toilet] only reaches one-third of the world?s population,? Doulaye Kon?, a water and sanitation expert and senior program officer with the Gates Foundation said Sept. 24.?

?It?s very expensive to buy this type of toilet, link it to kilometers and kilometers of sewer line, and build the kind of infrastructure that is needed to process it,? he added.

Yet he believes the problems can be fixed and he?s hoping to have more partners in Asia who will work with the organization on re-inventing the flush toilet.

A's cut?Rangers' lead in AL?West to 4

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:22 a.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - All it took was one big swing from George Kottaras to give the Oakland Athletics a much-needed victory against the team they're chasing in the AL West.

Kottaras hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning and the A's moved within four games of the division lead by beating the first-place Texas Rangers 3-2 Tuesday night.

"To do that and help the team in that manner was huge for me," Kottaras said. "I went up there looking for a fastball and he threw one that I could handle."

Before that, Oakland hitters were having a miserable time against the Texas bullpen. The A's managed only one hit and struck out nine times in five innings against Michael Kirkman, Koji Uehara and Alexi Ogando.

Instead of bringing in closer Joe Nathan or setup man Mike Adams, the Rangers went with Mark Lowe in the 10th.

Kottaras hit a 3-2 fastball from Lowe (0-2) into the first row of the upper deck in right field. The catcher has six home runs for the A's since he was acquired July 29 from Milwaukee.

The A's remained two games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the second AL wild-card spot. The Angels beat Seattle 5-4.

"Each and every win has a little bit more magnitude to it, especially against a team that's above you," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "This team's responded like this many, many times this year. It doesn't surprise me."

Lowe hadn't pitched in a week and has given up six runs in his last 1 1-3 innings. Nathan and Adams had pitched the past two days.

"Some of those other guys in the bullpen have to come in and get outs," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "It can't always be Joe Nathan or Mike Adams."

Texas' magic number remained at five for clinching its third straight division crown.

Scheduled starter Yu Darvish was scratched by the Rangers about 2 1/2 hours before the first pitch because of a stiff neck. Scott Feldman took his place.

Feldman was removed after allowing a leadoff single to Kottaras in the fifth. The right-hander gave up two runs and four hits in four-plus innings before being relieved by Kirkman.

"I wanted to go as long as I could," said Feldman, who threw 75 pitches. "I would have loved to have thrown 100 pitches."

The A's lost the opener of the four-game series 5-4 Monday night. The teams play five more times over the final eight games of the season.

Evan Scribner (1-0) earned his first career victory with a perfect 10th, and Grant Balfour got three outs for his 21st save in 23 chances.

Oakland has played five consecutive one-run games, winning two. The A's are 3-5 on a 10-game road trip against Detroit, the New York Yankees and the Rangers.

"It's an exciting feeling to be in this position," Kottaras said. "All we can do is control how we play. We've had a bunch of tough losses, but we keep pushing."

Chris Carter hit a solo homer for the A's with two outs in the fourth to tie the score at 2. He came into the game in a 6-for-45 funk with 27 strikeouts over his last 14 games.

Oakland starter Tommy Milone gave up three straight singles to start the game before retiring 15 of his next 16 batters. The young lefty yielded two unearned runs and six hits over six innings.

"Any win is big for us and kind of gives us momentum going into the last two games of the series," Milone said.

Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus opened the first with consecutive singles. Josh Hamilton lined a single to right that went under Brandon Moss' glove, allowing Kinsler and Andrus to score on the error.

Moss, who played his 21st game in the outfield this season, started in right for a slumping Josh Reddick - mired in an 0-for-28 slump.

Reddick came in as a pinch-hitter and lined out to end the eighth.

Moss made up for his misplay with a running catch of Andrus' deep fly on the warning track with the bases loaded to end the seventh.

Daric Barton, making his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 10, had an RBI double in the second to cut Oakland's deficit to 2-1.

NOTES: Oakland CF Coco Crisp came in as a pinch-runner in the eighth and stole second. He was not in the starting lineup for the seventh game in a row because of an eye infection. ... Andrus came into the game in a 4-for-32 slump. ... The A's struck out 15 times and have 1,322 for the season, two short of the AL record set in 2007 by Tampa Bay. ... Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach was in a front-row seat near the Texas dugout.

Pedaling For Health ? The Many Benefits of Biking | Natural Holistic ...

If you enjoy this post, please share it using the buttons in the post, or email it to a friend, we'd really appreciate it!

There are so many reasons to take up cycling, it???s fantastic exercise, you can get to places quicker than walking, it gives you a better night???s sleep and it increases your brainpower.

Most importantly it comes with loads of fitness and health benefits.

Cycling is proven to burn more calories and fat than a lot of sports as the body???s metabolic rate efficiently burns not only during the bike ride, but also for several hours after. Even after cycling for only 20 minutes, you could still be burning fat a couple of hours after.

The fitter you are the more profound the fitness benefits are. A cyclist who does fast intervals opposed to cycling at a constant slow pace is likely to burn three times as many calories.

It also allows you to have healthy family time as the whole family can get involved providing they???ve got a bike. Cycling is kind on your joints which makes it a very accessible sport whatever your age. Cycling is great for children as it shows them the benefits of exercise in a daily routine, and if they start young it???s likely they???ll continue to grow up and be healthy human beings who regularly exercise. Be sure to acquire the right equipment if children are participating. Cycling helmets at tweeks cycles are not only a must ??? but also affordable.

All exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle but quite importantly it can be helpful in warding off cancer. It???s been proven that cycling helps to keep your cells in working order. By no means could this remove or prevent the disease, but it would certainly improve your chances of remaining well. A study has shown that people who cycled at least 30 minutes a day were half as likely to develop cancer than those who didn???t.

Cycling isn???t just good for the body but it also benefits the brain. Cycling helps to build new brain cells that are responsible for the memory. (This tends to deteriorate at age 30). So cycling will undoubtedly give you those few extra brain cells to help you through the day helping you stay awake and focused.

Cycling also boosts the oxygen and blood flow to the brain which fires and regenerates receptors. Not only does it keep you alert, but it also helps you sleep when off to bed. Exercising outside exposes you to daylight, which helps get rid of stress and allows you to have a good night???s sleep.

One of the many reasons cycling is a popular sport to take up is because it can help you to look younger. Cycling regularly helps protect your skin against UV radiation therefore reducing the signs of aging.

The increased circulation by cycling helps to deliver nutrients and oxygen to cells more effectively, which in turn flushes out harmful toxins, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. However do make sure that you apply a high factor sun cream as to avoid being burnt, which could lead to skin cancer.

So why not start cycling to work or school to start a healthier lifestyle, there are so many benefits. You don???t have to be a pro at the sport but just the short regular bike ride will not only boost your metabolism but also benefit your body and your life.

And don?t forget your vitamins!

Finding a good multi-vitamin for the entire family can be difficult, but Xtend-Life???s Total Balance Unisex is the perfect supplement for everyone, even children from age 12 and older. It???s also perfect for women who have gone through menopause. In fact, Total Balance Unisex addresses issues that affect everyone, and it does so with a blend of all natural ingredients. The bio-actives present in Total Balance Unisex provide a great way of keeping healthy no matter what your age or gender.

ECB Headquarters Cost Overruns Not Good PR

Preaching austerity is easy, but the European Central Bank (ECB) has found that it can be difficult to put the virtue in the practice.

CNBC content available by kind permission of CNBC

By: Laurie Laird, Deputy News Editor, CNBC.com

The ECB on Thursday announced a significant overrun in the cost of its new headquarters, due for completion in 2014. A series of mishaps - an inconclusive tender process and a failure to identify structural problems in the new site - has pushed the final bill to as much as 1.2 billion euros ($ 1.56 billion), up from an original estimate of 850 million euros.

The EBC has laid out less than half of the projected total cost, raising the possibility that the total bill could rise further. The new headquarters will accommodate a 40 percent expansion of current personnel. The ECB declined to comment on hiring plans, but any move to expand the ECB?s role in bank supervision would require staffing increases.

Funding for the new premises comes from the ECB?s profits on its investment earnings and interest income. That could include revenues earned through bond purchases intended to dampen interest rates in highly-indebted euro zone countries.

Back in February, European finance ministers pledged to return profits on bond purchases to member countries, but it is not clear whether those funds have been funneled back to sovereign nations.

The ECB recorded a profit of 728 million euros in 2011 and will retain eight percent of that this year. The remainder is distributed to euro member countries in accordance to their paid up capital. Greece accounts for just under two percent of the ECB?s shareholding.

The move to the new headquarters is actually intended to save money, said Andrea Jurges, communications officer at the ECB, pointing out the bank is currently housed in rented quarters. ?Most of the reason [for the construction of new premises] is that its cost-prudent to build than to continue renting.?

Verizon Wireless: iPhone 5 won't be 'relocked'

19 hrs.

Verizon Wireless said Monday that it won't prevent its version of the iPhone 5 from being used on AT&T's network.

The Verizon version of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday, came with an unexpected feature: it works on the network of AT&T and many other phone companies, as well as on Verizon's.

It's the first time Verizon, the country's largest cellphone company, has sold a phone that works on competing U.S. networks with no complicated hacking, or "unlocking," procedures.

Last year, the first shipments of the Sprint iPhone 4S were unlocked and worked on AT&T, but Sprint later issued software updates that turned off that capability.

Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney said Monday that Verizon does not plan to relock the iPhone 5.

The feature may mean little initially to most buyers, since they sign up for two years of Verizon service when buying the phone. But it does give them the option to switch carriers when the contract expires, or they can sell the phone to someone who plans to use it on a competing network. They also have the option of breaking the contract, paying an early termination fee, and signing up for cheaper service ??the Verizon iPhone 5 even works on prepaid service plans.

Verizon and Sprint do "unlock" other phones on request, but only for use on non-U.S. networks. They do so to let travelers save money by using local SIM cards and accounts when overseas.

Even unlocked, Verizon iPhones are tied to Verizon's network: it's the only one that can provide them with "4G LTE" data speeds. The Verizon iPhone 5 can access AT&T's non-LTE "4G" network, which has slightly lower speeds.

T-Mobile USA, the country's fourth-largest phone company, has a network that's compatible with the Verizon iPhone 5 for voice calls and low-speed data. It's revamping the network in a way that will make it compatible with the iPhone 5 for high-speed data as well, and last week started actively marketing to iPhone 4 owners.

Sprint Nextel said Monday that its iPhone 5s are locked. Customers in good standing for at least three months can ask to have them unlocked for international use only. AT&T unlocks phones once they're out of contract.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC of Britain.

Exposing cancer's lethal couriers

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Malignant cells that leave a primary tumor, travel the bloodstream and grow out of control in new locations cause the vast majority of cancer deaths. New nanotechnology developed at Case Western Reserve University detects these metastases in mouse models of breast cancer far earlier than current methods, a step toward earlier, life-saving diagnosis and treatment.

A team of scientists, engineers and students across five disciplines built nanochains that home in on metastases before they've grown into new tissues, and, through magnetic resonance imaging, detect their locations.

Images of the precise location and extent of metastases could be used to guide surgery or ablation, or the same technology used to find the cancer could be used to deliver cancer-killing drugs directly to the cells before a tumor forms, the researchers suggest.

The work is described in this week's online issue of the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano.

"Micrometastases can't be seen with the naked eye, but you have to catch them at this stage -- see the exact spots they're located and see them all," said Efstathios Karathanasis, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, and senior author. "Even if you miss only one, you prolong survival, but one metastasis can still kill."

Karathanasis worked with research associate Pubudu M. Peiris, graduate student Randall Toy; undergraduate students Elizabeth Doolittle, Jenna Pansky, Aaron Abramowski, Morgan Tam, Peter Vicente, Emily Tran, Elliott Hayden and Andrew Camann; medical student Zachary Berman, senior research associate Bernadette O. Erokwu, biomedical engineering professor David Wilson, chemical engineering associate professor Harihara Baskaran; and, from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, radiology assistant professor Chris A. Flask and pharmacology associate professor and department vice chair Ruth A. Keri.

Tumor detection technologies fail to uncover cancer cells that have taken hold in new locations because young metastases don't behave the same as established tumors.

After a breast cancer cell enters the bloodstream, it most often stops in the liver, spleen or lungs and begins overexpressing surface molecules called integrins. Integrins act as a glue between the cancer cell and the lining of a blood vessel that feeds the organ.

"We target integrins," Karathanasis said. "Normal blood vessel walls don't present integrins towards the blood site unless cancer cells attach there."

To home in on the cancer marker, the researchers first needed to build a nano device that would drift out of the central flow of the blood stream and to the blood vessel walls. The most common shape of nanoparticles is a sphere, but a sphere tends to go with the flow.

Karathanasis' team tailored nanoparticles to connect one to another much like a stack of Legos. Due to its size and shape, the oblong chain tumbles out of the main current and skirts along vessel walls.

The exterior of the chain has multiple sites designed to bind with integrins. Once one site latches on, others grab hold. Compared to nanospheres, the chains' attachment rate in flow tests was nearly 10-fold higher.

To enable a doctor to see where a relative few cancer cells sit in a sea of healthy cells, the scientists incorporated fluorescent markers and, to make the nanochains more visible in magnetic resonance imaging, four links made of iron oxide.

Next, the team tested the chains in a mouse model of an aggressive form of breast cancer that metastasizes to sites and organs much the same way it does in humans.

From established research, they knew metastases would be present five weeks into the modeling. They injected nanochains into the bloodstream and, within an hour, two imaging techniques -- fluorescence molecular tomography and MRI's -- showed where traveling cancer cells had established footholds, primarily in the liver, lungs and spleen.

The metastases located using the nanochains ranged from .2 to 2 millimeters across.

Later imaging at high magnification showed that these metastatic cancer cells were found mostly in the blood vessel walls, before they'd had time to grow into organ tissue.

"Once metastatic cells move into the tissue, develop their own microenvironment, and grow into a 1-centimeter lesion, it typically indicates a late stage of metastatic disease which has an unfavorable outcome," Karathanasis said.

According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year survival rate of breast cancer patients sharply decreases from 98 percent in cases that catch the disease when it has produced only a localized primary lesion to 23 percent in cases in which distant large metastases have grown.

Now that they've proved the concept works, the team is bringing clinical radiologists on board led by Vikas Gulani, assistant professor of radiology. Their job is to help with a new study, calculating how much new cancer the technology finds and misses.

If nothing is resolved before year-end and Congress fails to take action, dividends received will be taxed as ordinary income instead of the current maximum 15%. Ordinary income tax rates are scheduled to revert to pre-2003 levels, with a maximum of 39.6%. In addition, a new 3.8% tax will be tacked on to help pay for the Affordable Care Act. Fed up with high volatility and low absolute returns, investors are searching for the closest thing in stocks to a sure thing: dividends. Baby Showers: What to Prepare - Anatomical Gift Act

In honor of the new baby and parents-to-be, friends and family members all gather to celebrate at the baby shower. It is not just a day of giving gifts to the future mother and father, but also a day for love, appreciation, and merry-making.

Planning for the baby shower is almost like planning for a birthday party or any other similar event. There are lots of things to consider, such as the numbers of guests, the theme (if there is any), the venue for the party, the food, music, and activities.

First thing?s first, you have to know how many people you are inviting and how many are actually going. The type of venue to get and the amount of food served depends on the number of guests attending. You can choose to have invitation cards sent out to each and include a contact number so as you can confirm who is coming to the party. Once you have your final list, you can then start on looking for the perfect venue for the special day.

If there only a few people you invited, it is best to have the celebration at home. It will save you the money from the booking, and time and effort in looking for such a place. For twenty or more guests, you will need to find a location where it can accommodate that number. Conference rooms would surely suffice. Usually in hotels, they also offer catering services. With that, you can book an already-decorated room and avail of their catering at the same time. At this juncture, you have completed three of your baby shower planning tasks.

You simply cannot have a party without music! So, try to make a playlist that will suit the occasion. You might also want to think of your guests; if most of them are older, they may find it pleasant to hear classical music in comparison to pop or anything else. Depending on your theme (again, if you are planning to have one), your list of songs ought to go with it, too.

To make the celebration livelier, come up with certain activities that your guests can participate in. You can have games for both kids and adults so they won?t get bored, or worse, leave the party. Considering you have tons of things to do now, hiring someone who can assist you in preparing and coordinating these games might be a good option.

Planning for a baby shower is easy when you know what things to take on. On the other hand, if you think this takes a lot of your time, you can always contact a party planner to do it all for you.
