COLOGNE, Germany – Netflix has signed a deal with Walt Disney Studios that gives the online VOD service exclusive subscription video-on-demand rights in the Netherlands for all animated and live action films Disney releases in the territory.
The multi-year deal, which kicks off in early 2014, includes both new and library product and features titles from all of Disney's studios.

Highlights include Marvel's The Avengers, Pixar's Monsters University and Disney's The Lone Ranger, as well as back catalogue titles including The Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Wall-E and Ratatouille. ABC television productions, including episodes of Lost, are also part of the Dutch deal.
The deal is a boost to Netflix's nascent Dutch operations, which launched last month.
If successful, the agreement could signal a major shift in Europe, where the rollout of VOD services, such as Netflix, has lagged behind that of the United States.
Cache' Heidel, the fiancee' of football player Jonathan Ferrell who was shot and killed by North Carolina police officers after a car wreck, speaks out.

The fiancée of a former football player who was fatally shot ten times by a Charlotte police officer after a car accident, has a surprising message.
“I’ve forgiven him,” Caché Heidel said in an interview with NBC News. “I'm not hateful. I understand it. He was scared. It just hurts.”
Still, one month after Jonathan Ferrell’s death, Heidel is struggling with the pain of what happened that night in mid-September.
"Everything went wrong that evening that could possibly go wrong,” she said, choking back tears.
The night he never came home
Heidel said Ferrell, her 24-year-old fiancé, had dropped off a co-worker and was driving home around 2 a.m. Sept. 14 when he veered off the road, crashed, and ran to a nearby house for help.
A frightened woman thought a burglar was banging on her door and called 911.
“She was afraid,” Heidel said when asked about the woman’s response. “She had a baby. It was 2 in the morning. She just reacted on fear and that’s all that happened that night.”
When three officers arrived, police say Ferrell ran towards them. One officer used a Taser, unsuccessfully, but it’s still unclear why it didn't connect.
Then another officer, Randall Kerrick, fired 12 shots, hitting the unarmed Farrell ten times.
"It hurt me when I found out he pretty much emptied his clip," Heidel said. “It was out of fear. I do feel like he intended to kill him because he was so scared.”
She said she believes the officer had an “unconscious bias” that he didn’t realize he had “until that moment.”
"I felt like if somebody had just taken a step back and really figured out what was going wrong with him they would have known he didn't cause a threat to anybody," she said.
Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter less than 24 hours after the incident — which was uncharacteristically fast for a police-involved shooting.
His attorney, Michael Greene, declined to comment on Heidel's interview, telling NBC News that his previous statements still summarized the defense team's position.
"We are confident that at the resolution of this case, it will be found that Officer Kerrick's actions were justified," Greene said in September.
National outrage
The case has sparked debate across the country. The president of the Charlotte-Mecklenberg branch of the NAACP, for one, doesn’t think the manslaughter charge is enough.
“When you find out that he shot four times, paused, (then) shot six times, paused, (then) shot two times — that was deliberate murder,” said Rev. Kojo Nantambu.
Still, the NAACP and Ferrell’s family has praised Charlotte Police Chief Rodney Moore for investigating so quickly.
"This is the only time in my career I've ever heard of a police officer being charged with a crime arising out of a shooting the same day," said Scott MacLatchie, an attorney and police training expert.
Yet some police unions are saying the quick charge will have a chilling effect on officers on patrol.
“Officers throughout this country are going to be concerned that they are going to be arrested when actions are taken that are justified,” said Daniel Trelka, the police chief in Waterloo, Iowa. “As such, someone is going to lose their life acting too slowly. “
Civil lawsuit may be next
The North Carolina attorney general is now investigating the case, but Chris Chesnut, the attorney representing Ferrell’s family, said he also plans to file a civil lawsuit.
“This is completely unreasonable,” Chestnut said. “It’s demonstrative of a lack of training. It is frightening — this unconscious bias that leads to 12 shots at an innocent, unarmed victim.”
Ferrell’s family also wants the police dashcam video to be released.
'Sweets'
Meanwhile, Heidel is still without her 'Sweets.'
“I always called him 'Sweets' because he was the sweetest person I ever met,” Heidel said.
They had been engaged for six years after meeting during their junior year of high school. A few years later, he proposed. But they endured a long-distance relationship. He played football for Florida A&M University, but she was in graduate school in Winston-Salem, N.C.
They had recently moved to Charlotte to be together. She was an accountant. He was working two jobs to finish school. He wanted to build engines.
Heidel smiles when she remembers the moment she fell for him. They were driving home from a high school football game. He was pumping gas when he saw a woman digging through the trash. While Heidel waited in the car, she said she saw Ferrell take the woman inside the gas station and bought her food.
“He was someone who felt bad walking past the homeless person on the street,” Heidel says.
But often, she speaks of him in the present tense.
“He's my best friend.”

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Jury selection began on Tuesday in the murder trial of a prominent Utah doctor accused of killing his wife with a cocktail of drugs so he could continue an extramarital affair.
Martin MacNeill, 57, urged his wife to get a facelift then arranged for her to receive a deadly mix of prescription drugs while she recovered, so he could be with his alleged lover Gypsy Willis, according to a lengthy arrest affidavit.
On April 11, 2007, Michele MacNeill was found fully clothed but unresponsive in a bathtub by the couple's 6-year-old daughter in their home about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.
The 50-year-old mother of eight was pronounced dead later that day. After an autopsy in 2007, a medical examiner ruled the death was natural, a result of "chronic hypertension and myocarditis," court documents show.
Three years later, a second look at Michele MacNeill's toxicology report - at her children's request - prompted the chief medical examiner to change the cause of death to the combined effects of heart disease and drug toxicity. The manner of death was then changed to "undetermined."
The Utah County attorney's office launched its investigation in 2008. MacNeill was charged with first-degree felony murder and second-degree felony obstruction of justice in 2012. He denies the charges.
Following Michele MacNeill's death, MacNeill named the alleged mistress Willis as his beneficiary. If convicted, MacNeill could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Testimony in the trial is expected to begin Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford's Theatre will reopen its doors and resume performances Wednesday, using private funding, even though the government shutdown has continued into a third week.
Theater officials announced Tuesday that the national historic site and performance space will reopen Wednesday. Theater trustee Ronald O. Perelman, the chairman and CEO of MacAndrews and Forbes Holdings Inc., donated $25,000 in emergency funding to pay for the theater's operations for the next eight days.
Ford's Theatre, where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, is a National Park Service site. A private group runs the theater's programming.
On Wednesday, the theater will resume performances of "The Laramie Project," which is part of the theater's Lincoln Legacy Project focusing on diversity and equality. The production marks 15 years since Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, was abducted and killed in Laramie, Wyo. Remaining tickets are $25 each.
The Ford's Theatre Society has been losing about $100,000 in revenue per week since the theater went dark at the start of the highly anticipated "Laramie Project" production due to the government shutdown, said spokeswoman Lauren Beyea. The show will run through Oct. 27, but will not be extended because the actors have other commitments.
An agreement was made to reopen Ford's Theatre after several states agreed to provide funding to reopen national parks in other areas. The National Park Service agreed to a similar arrangement for the theater.

After going a year without a permanent executive in charge of its retail division, Apple said Tuesday morning that it is hiring Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as a senior vice president. She will be the first woman on Apple's team of senior executives.
A veteran of the fashion industry, Ahrendts, 53, is a native of New Palestine, Ind., who has headed Britain's Burberry since 2006. On Tuesday, the company reported total revenue of more than $1.64 billion in the six-month period that ended Sept. 30. Her tenure included a successful revamping of the company's online store.
When she joins Apple next spring, Ahrendts will oversee "the strategic direction, expansion and operation of both Apple retail and online stores," the company says. She replaces John Browett, who had occupied Apple's retail post for less than a year when he was let go last October.
Ahrendts will have a bit more control than Browett had, reports Apple Insider, noting that as part of a newly created position, her turf will include both online and brick-and-mortar stores.
In a statement accompanying a news release, Ahrendts said she would work to improve customer service at the company's stores. Browett had taken criticism for moving to cut staffing costs at Apple's storefront operations.
Ahrendts "also has experience expanding into China — where Burberry now has more than 70 stores in the country against Apple's eight," reports Britain's The Telegraph. "Slow growth in Apple's Chinese retail operations was pinned as another reason for Mr Browett's departure."
For Apple, Ahrendts is the second recent arrival from the fashion world. And her arrival may coincide with the arrival of a new product line, as The New York Times reports:
"Ms. Ahrendts is Apple's second big hire from the fashion industry amid reports that the company is readying an Internet-connected wristwatch. In the summer, the company hired Paul Deneve, the former chief executive of Yves Saint Laurent, the French fashion house, to work on special projects, reporting directly to Timothy D. Cook, Apple's chief executive."
This summer, Ahrendts made headlines when it was revealed that she earned more than $26 million — far more than any other top executive at Britain's largest companies. A large part of the payout, as The Daily Mail reported, came from selling accrued shares of Burberry's stock.
